Focoty's build. Ballin' on a budget.

Hey everybody,

My name is Ty and I am the proud owner of a 2001 4Runner 177K, supercharged :dancin: My past included several Jeeps and most recently a Nissan Xterra that was awesome to me. Awesome until I had to get rid of it from the infamous SMOD (Strawberry Milkshake of Death) tranny/coolant mixing that took out so many of that year range of Xterra's. Thankfully I was able to come across this beauty at a dealer just down the road from me.

This guy will be my DD/camping rig so i don't plan on doing anything too incredibly intense to it, but we will see how that goes :)

So when i bought it the car didn't have the factory roof rack installed, just some little plastic runners screwed in where the original one would be. Because of this I think the previous owner went out and purchased a yakima crossbar system and installed that along with some mystery roof basket. The yakima thing is alright, however its rusted to hell up top so I went out and ventured to the local U-Pull and grabbed myself a rack and got it installed.

Current projects going on/immediate plans:

-Giving the roof basket a fresh coat of paint

-Need to do a timing belt change. I have no record of it being done previously, although at 177K I would imagine it had to have been done at some point. Although the drive/supercharger belts are getting some cracking in them so i would imagine it all needs to be done.

-Need to replace spark plugs. These guys look a little worn out, and technically aren't even the correct temp rating for a supercharger

Future/Who knows when plans:

-Can't decide if i like the wheels. I might try to find/swap for a different set at some point

-Need some better stereo action going on in there

-I hate the power antenna. Get that taken care of.

-Whatever random mods I find throughout the forum :)

This build thread probably serves me more as a record keeping thing than as an awesome entertaining build for you guys, but take what you will from it. My name for the vehicle is still up in the air so suggestions are always welcome :AK47:

Took advantage of a nice day to get some stuff done!

I started off with doing the plugs and wires, the plugs definitely needed to be changed.

I wasn't originally planning on doing the wires, but after taking a closer look at them I saw that they said "Sumimoto 2001" on them meaning they were the original ones. So I figured I'd join the club and get me some of those sexy blue wires :)

After installing the plugs I had a bit of a rough idle and a CEL, so i pulled them all out again double checked the gaps and threw some dielectric grease on it all and that seemed to do the trick. On the first test drive with the new plugs I had a strange issue where my idle at a stop light would drop down to like 3-400 RPM. No real stumbling or CEL but the idle was real low. However after driving around for a bit it seemed to correct itself and get back into the more normal range. I'm sure this is the first time the car has been run on the Denso IK22's so it could take a little time for it to adjust.

Finally I did a few cosmetic things, the grille was real beat up from rock chips and such so I just threw on a few coats of spray paint and it looks good as new. I figured I'd also plastic-dip the back badges as well, I'm not a huge fan of the chrome look. I also scored a sweet deal today with a neighbor getting rid of their Thule bike rack. They didn't have a car that it would fit on anymore and its a little beat up so they were just going to toss it. So I figured I'd take it off their hands :dancin:

I am heading up camping this weekend so we will see how she does on a few trails and I'll make sure to snap some pics. Otherwise, next up will be the timing belt ASAP

That is a sharp looking truck. Mine did the same thing with the low idle after I changed the plugs. Cleared up after 10-20 miles.

Exactly. I was super nervous at first when I was at a stop light and it dropped below 500. But after driving around for a bit it all seemed to go back to normal. I guess it might take a bit extra for the computer to get used to those particular plugs.

Finally got my timing belt, water pump, tensioners, thermostat, and drive belts all replaced last week. Knowing what you are doing and with the right tools you can get that job done in probably a few hours. It took me a couple days and a little more beer than i was planning on but it still saved me quite a bit of money doing it myself. The previous owner had no proof of the timing belt ever being done and at 177K I think it was still on its original belt. The water pump was a mess and leaking like crazy as well.

I also finally got a new coat of paint on the roof basket, since it was pretty rusty. I need to find some decent mounts for it because its currently held on with some heavy duty zip ties.......

Next on the agenda, I think I am going to paint the wheels with some duplicolor graphite. I don't particularly like the ones that are one there and I can't afford new ones right now so thats probably my best option. Unless somebody in the Denver-ish area is interested in swapping for some Tundra/Sequoia wheels or anything else aftermarket in a darker color :bigok: I also think I'll be doing the LED swap pretty soon, almost all the lights on the radio/climate controls are out, and it makes it a huge pain at night to change radio stations and whatnot.

Slow and steady but progress is being made, and I love every minute of it!!
