For those of you that have dogs!

We are about to get one, we want one who will ride with us and do outdoor stuff! What kind of dogs do you guys have? Pics are welcome!

Just a heads up. I don’t know what breed you’re interested in but if you’re considering an American Pit Bill Terrier they require a lot more responsibility than most breeds. They are down from dog fighting blood lines and one day without warning that fighting instinct could show its ugly face. Not all will try to fight but there’s always that chance. So they should NEVER be allowed off leash or to run free. I owned APBT’s for about 15 years. I had a few that wanted to fight everything with 4 legs and fur despite being some of the most people loving dogs you could ever meet.

I'm not sure I agree with that statement. Pit Bulls used to be called "Nanny Dogs" as they were used to watch over young children. My personal opinion is that it's the owner that influences how a dog reacts to the environment (and people) around it - no matter what breed. Sure, pitties have a bad reputation, but much of it is based on myth, not facts.

As partial proof, I offer our pit bull rescue Herbie. He's the sweetest, gentlest, most loving dog I've ever met. I don't know how that's possible given how badly his first human mistreated him. Here he is meeting our granddaughters for the very first time. Note the look on everybody's face. There just isn't a mean bone in his body.

As I stated my dogs that were very dog aggressive were some of the most people loving dogs you could meet. When I had mine I had my daughter around them and they loved her to death. They never met a stranger. Not very good guard dogs but as far as other dogs go not friendly at all. Like I said they are down from fighting dogs. An ugly history but it’s what’s made pits what they are today. Great loving dogs that require a lot of responsibility. Not all will be dog aggressive. But there’s always that chance.

Wow, that sucks. Our pittie is actually pretty good with other dogs. It's the people walking down the street who are deathly afraid of him - until the meet him.

It’s a shame the bad rap pits have. They are very loyal loving dogs.

I do a lot of field training with my Labs, and haul a lot of training gear plus the dogs. I have a TransK9 box in the back and haul an ATV on a regular basis.

If you travel and stay at campgrounds be aware that some won't allow any type of pit-bull, it makes no difference whether their reputation is deserved or not there are liabilities involved. We traveled over most of the country with our Lab mix that looked like a Lab and never a problem staying anywhere. When we had to have her put down at 14.5 years old she had been in 43 states, pretty good for a farm mutt!
