For those who are considering or undertaking an engine swap...

My definition of adequate is actually pretty simple. Can it drive over Vail Pass or through the Eisenhower Tunnel at 65mph? If the answer is yes, power is adequate.

I think I managed about 40 heading into Eisenhower tunnel coming back from Moab last March. It was fantastic. Just me and the guys towing trailers chilling in the slow lane

If mine could maintain 65 on flat ground without downshifting I'd probably think that way to.

Both of mine could hold 65 at altitude on a grade with 285 tires. Both were also 5-speeds left in 3rd (totally normal for this type of driving, I leave my 6-speed acura in 4th for the same sections of road, my LX450 gets left in 2nd and can also hold 60ish). Maybe you've lost some ponies over the years?

Oh I guarantee it has. It's on the low end of acceptable compression. I never even use OD. Just leave it in 3rd. Hoping gears help but in the end this thing is underpowered in my opinion and thus why I want a different motor. But to each his own. This is a subjective opinion and will vary based on each person.

What are the most popular swaps for the 3rd gen? I just recently discovered the Diesel 1KZ-TE but I have also read on this forum that that engine isn't worth it. I currently have 2 3rd gens one with just over 300K and one with 250K. Both of them are absolute 8/10 on all levels.

I have been a professional mechanic all my life so I have done a lot of maintenance on both my rigs since I picked them up and I would absolutely love to get 1'000'000 miles on one of them without having to do any major drive train overhauls to prove that these vehicles are hands down the best of the best.

My green 99 I have been dumping tons of money into lately (Icon suspension Thanks A.Wilson, Addco Sway bars, Poly rack bushings, 05 Tundra brake upgrade, LS460 retrofit, 4x front bumper, CBI hybrid rear bumper 276/65R18 Toyo's and FN BFD wheels) The next big mod for me is going to be a supercharger, URD 7th injector and AEM fuel/ignition tuner. I also really want to try twin charging this engine. But with all the money forced injecting will require I'm definitely curious about a whole engine swap.

Those graphics are highly sought after and not cheap! Neither is anything else about that truck. Factory PTO winch, cable lockers, high-roof model and of course, the venerable 12ht--aka the most you'll ever $$$pend on 135hp

The first time you experience a properly set up Toyota/Lexus V8 swapped 4Runner...All your questions will be answered. :driving:

I went with the full SC package - headers, exhaust, 2.2 pulley, 7th injector, professionally tuned on Mustang Dyno. It's running as good as it ever could.

The thought process for my engine swap? I don't like paying for premium! That shit is silly expensive on the coast.... Also, finding premium fuel when you're in butt-fudge nowhere isn't the easiest.

What I look forward to the most in using my 4Runner is long trips - not worrying about my next fuel stop will provide a large peace of mind.

Issues w/engine swap

New to forms so but sure how to start a new thread but recently swamped a rebuilt V6 with JBA Headers into my 98 Runner and expecting some issues while it settles in. Currently right starts and rpms sitting at 5oo or slightly lower, pressing gas stalls truck out... If I leave it idle it will get upto 800 and maintain. It's only been 4 days since the swap though so maybe I'm just being impatient?

...a full new clutch system went in at the same time, really hard to impossible to shift, bled clutch... Shifted well for a day then problems resurfaced :s
Anybody have any thoughts?

Need help with Engine Swap - St. Louis Area

Hey guys, new here but not to wrenching on 3rd Gen T4Rs. Anyway, not mechanic, but did my own timing belt job and realized that my crankshaft is bent (Short Story). Tried a new harmonic balancer / crank pulley, didn't work so I know its the crankshaft.

Not many options for me, as stated earlier in thread, will cost me $$$$ for either Rebuild ($4500 quote) and a engine swap from a Stealership ($7K). Opting not to go those routes, but am looking for someone in the Saint Louis, MO area to assist when the time comes. I have the majority of the tools that I need (excluding Engine hoist).

If any of you are interested, or know someone who might be, I can compensate with plenty of beer and food.

Wow, those are some terrible prices! Even high CA rates wouldn't charge that much for a new engine!! As a reference, I bought a low mileage unit for $1300 delivered and put in $500 in gaskets & fluids and tools to get the job done.

A tip as I just did this a year ago, good 5VZ-FE's are becoming increasingly hard to find. A compression test is a must, if the seller (be it private or a shop) won't provide those numbers be suspect of the engine's condition. It seems the only ones listed nowadays are ones with issues.

Don't go JDM unless you really, really want a low mileage (under 100K miles) engine, it's a lot of work. Even getting one from a Tacoma or T100/Tundra is way less work, just some accessories & intake stuff to swap on those.

Because I use it PROPERLY!!

First and foremost, anyone who thinks a 4runner is a racecar..... you're an idiot!! It's not, it's a 4runner, a Very capable off-road (and sometimes ON) vehicle. I'm interested in swapping out my 3.4l for a V8 because of (again) OFF-ROAD horsepower & tourqe. I live in Virginia, and anyone familiar with Virginia knows that we have a "plethora" of swamps & swampland. I LOVE my 4runner, and it's incredible little 3.4l V6. However, when you want to play in the swamp and are faced with 2-3 or 4ft of what we refer to as "Oatmeal" (that's the kind of mud that will stick to the ceiling until you scrape it off), you need more horsepower, it's just a fact!!! So, not everyone is looking at an engine swap Solely for the purpose of going faster. In fact, I couldn't care less about faster. If I wanted a racecar (just like everybody else has)that's what I'd have. Off-road horsepower & tourqe for muddin' it up, rootin', off-roading or plane old fun in the mud, however you refer to your happy place, that's what the engine swap is about. I can't be alone in this rational way of thinking....am I ?
