frame question

Do the 5th gen (2016 in my case) 4Runners have a galvanized frame?

Well it’s definitely coated with a chassis paint. I doubt they would galvanize the frame and then paint it just from a paint quality/adhesion assurance standpoint.

Why do you ask?

I just noticed my 2016 has part of the inner body mount (passenger side, front most mount) with rust and flaking metal like it’s decades old. Hell, my 78 Bronco doesn’t even have something like this underneath.

I haven’t searched the issue yet though.

just curious...read something about the new wranglers being galvanized and they are having serious frame welding issues. missed welds, porous, rusting, etc...lots of pics on the interwebs...can't believe any of the new jl wranglers made it out of quality control. waiting for that to stabilize then may buy one.

Galvanised frame

Galvanizing is done by dipping the finished piece. There are so many holes and openings in a T4R frame I can't imagine how this would work. It would add weight and serious cost. The paint is pretty good. If you get down there and look for scrapes and rust you can touch it up once in a while.

Edit:
There are dozens if not hundreds of threaded bolts welded into the frame for attaching parts. These would all need re-tapping after a galvanizing process. I just don't see it happening to the T4R as it is built today.

Wouldn't they galvanize it AFTER the welding?
If you ever tried to weld galvanized metal you already know the answer to this.

Welding issues, missed welds would have nothing to do with the galvanizing process, just poor quality control........but then again you did say Jeep.

Add this to the hundred reasons I’d never buy a Jeep product. Well, maybe that Jeep mountain bike.., it’s pretty cool, other than it says Jeep on it.

Not on the 4Runner, and I haven’t heard of anything on the JL being galvanized, you’d think it’d be a selling point. I do know the body panels on G wagons are galvanized, which is awesome imo. Only galvanized frames I know of are hot-dipped replacements for older vehicles, notably Rovers.

a factory full of workers feeling like shit from zinc oxide fumes would explain a whole lot about jeep build quality. are we sure they haven't been welding galvanized parts for decades?

Holy moly that's some crappy welding on the new JL's.

I've watched a toyota welding machine - it went back after welding and xray'd the entire weld to ensure no porosity. I'm guessing FCA doesn't have that... or shielding gas...

If anyone ever says all of today's cars are well made - you can show them these pics. Some of them are bad enough dealers are just sending them back without trying to sell them.

Oh, and yes suspension brackets are literally breaking off on stock jeeps. Still want a JL? (Kinda)

Oh my god, jesus christ are those real JL pics? Holy shit they went full Italian, those welds are terrible. Do the Italians not QA anything? This is so bad it's impressive, most apprentice welders can booger better than this, or at least have the self respect to keep boogering until you at least have enough to grind into an almost respectable weld.
