my 2 cents on the CA legal cats, and companies not shipping cats to CA.....
As i was informed, it costs aftermarket companies a good bit of $$ to obtain a CARB certification on their catalytic converters, for this reason not all cat's are carb approved. For legal reasons, a parts supplier cannot sell a non CARB catalytic converter to anyone residing in CA.
Interesting study i did, i live in CA, very close to the oregon border. my job lets me keep my oregon residency. I had a geo tracker that needed a cat, i drove over to oregon, picked up a nice magnaflow cat (non carb compliant) and installed it.
When i sold that tracker i had to smog it at a CA smog shop, wouldn't you know it passed emmisions with a lot of room to spare. granted the motor was very healthy and well tuned, but my emissions were WAY below the threshold on all levels.
I'm not saying what i did was right, and i am not telling anyone to do the same, infact its illegal based on my research. however the end result is still the same.

I don't think what you did was wrong at all! The goal is to have clean exhaust. You accomplished that. Screw California for trying to make it more costly than need be for us to achieve that goal.

They scrap them for the metal. I think there is platinum in there or something.
I had to replace the cat on my 95 S-10 (still OBD II) a few years ago and a local muffler shop welded on a Flowmaster high flow for 275 bucks out the door(ghetto long beach muffler shop). Granted there was no missing sensors or other damage. It passed smog fine with the new cat even though it was a high flow....and im in southern california.

They aren't aren't scraped for metal but for what's inside them. A few years back the Silverado k1500 and 3 series had a huge problem here in AZ, each cat was brining in a few hundred bucks each.
Cat thefts have slightly come back up since the sale of copper has been monitored like crazy here. We even had a few cases back when gas was 4.50+ that people had their gas tanks drilled into.
