front coil / shock assemble charge.

im in the market for a lift kit right now and im noticing this "front coil/shock assemble" charge they can do for ~$100-$200
im curious what is this?
i mean are they talking about putting the shock on the strut? for that much? there must be something im missing on why its so expensive.
which is the reason for this thread, im missing something forsure can anyone help me clarify?

Yes, they're talking about assembling the shock and strut completely so it's a bolt on upgrade. It's pretty overpriced, but definitely not something most would recommend doing yourself. Those spring compressors you rent feel like death traps.

If available, I'd take it to a shop and have them assemble it for you. Shouldn't be more than 40 bucks.

yeah my local shop did it for $65, make sure tell them you just want them to through on their hydrualic spring compressor, even les schwab will do it for you for around that price.

this is far cheaper then buying the tools to do it yourself and you know it'll get done right, i did it myself and even though i have put a lift on every single truck i've owned i fubar'd this thing and wish i would have just gotten them assembled before hand as well.

but then again it may just be worth it to pay the toytech price as if you go to a 3rd party shop and they mess something up and having problems i don't know how toytech would feel about that.

bottom line it takes all of 5-10 minutes to assemble these things if you got the right tool it is kind of hard to mess up and i don't see paying anybody 'cept a doctor,lawyer or a hooker (not in that order) $100-200 for 10 minutes worth of work.

you can by a cheap harbour freight compressor for around 230.....

kind of crappy but it should be good for a few years of use for the shade tree mech.

i just have to say i went through 4 of the hand spring compressors and they all had major flaws, not enough travel, hooks to big for the coil wraps and a bunch of other things. and still didn't get the coils compressed enough.

Word of advice though!, when I was lifting my Tacoma I took everything to a local shop, even printed out the page from the factory service manual so they could see exactly how they needed to be assembled, of course I got this FU look from the mechanic when I handed him the print out. Get them home, and they are assembled incorrectly, the bottom spring perch was on upside down. My bad I guess but I was working down in Elizabeth City NC at the time, Bubba clearly didn't know what the heck he was doing. If you decide to try and tackle this yourself, those spring compressers are scary when you torque them down and they are bending, I've heard of them coming apart, there is a lot of energy in those springs. I ended up taking them to another shop and they had them done correctly in about 20 minutes and it only cost me 65 for both.

Toytec also gives you a new top plate and nuts and bolts too for the $100 charge. Its still a little high, but it is nice to have all new hardware when installing. If I didnt order the coilovers, and gotten the 882's with new shocks, I would have paid Toytec $100 to assemble them.

cost me $40 to take my stockers apart and build Tundra coilovers. they had a tough time with it still, money well spent :bigok:

When we assemble our stuff, that also includes new shock top plates and new bushings and hardware. Most shops should be able to do it for about half that if you are reusing your stock stuff
