front diff 430 ratio

I have been looking into changing my front diff to a 430 ratio to match the rear elocker I just got. Are all the front diffs the same except for the ratio. several listings say 4cyl or 6 cyl and one site even has tundra listed to fit my 3rd gen runner. So what front diff can I swap into my 2001 runner??

Not sure about the tundra, but I believe (someone please correct me if I'm wrong) that the 4/6cyl front diffs are the same. You just have to look for a electronic actuated diff instead of the vacuum ones that the older 3rd gen models had.

P.S.-- swapping the front diff is a massive pain in the ass

You can swap the ADD actuator, so any ('96-'02 4Runner) front diff will do if it has the ratio you want.

Edit: Also first gen Taco '96-'04 - though not sure on easily found ratios with those.

Charlie so what I hear you say is "any" 3rd gen front diff will work and that the 4cyl and 6cyl diffs are built the same. ( I know that some of the american made cars the 4cyl is not as strong as the 6cyl or v8 ..... ex trans and rear ends) also I know I can change the ADD
tks

As far as I know 4cyl diffs are pre '95 on 4runners & truck's.
Even though I have a 4cyl 99 my diffs are still considered a 8" 6cyl (or 7.5 on the front)

This is from Zuk's page. http://home.4x4wire.com/erik/diffs/#taco_ifs

95-03 Tacoma, '00-04 Tundra, ?? Sequoia's, and 96-02 4Runners have a high-pinion 7.5" IFS front diff offset to the drivers side. The high-pinion design is used so that the rack and pinion steering and anti-sway bar on these vehicles can run under the front driveshaft. The housing is a unique bolt-together design. The carrier inside is exactly the same as the '86-95 IFS diffs, so LSD's and lockers for it are also the same. However, since this is a high-pinion diff, the gears for it are different (reverse-cut) than the earlier diff. There is an ADD and non-ADD version of this diff as well.
These diffs use different gear sets than the earlier IFS diff because of the high-pinion design.
- Driver's side
- High pinion
- 27 spline axles
- Bolt-together "clamshell" housing design.
