Front License plate holes don't line up

So after owning the 4runner for almost two years I'm finally putting the ca required front license plate. Went to install it into the two holes in the bumper and it doesn't line up at all.

Anyone else have this problem?

You must have gotten one of the 49 state 4R, not a California version. :biggrin2:

Yup bought the darn thing from Nevada. I bought another car from Texas and had no issues at all putting the plates on. Darn it.

Might just make a second hole in the plate then.

Did u just end up drilling a new hold in the plate?

I can maybe drill two holes into the bumper hole area towards the inside to make it like up with the plate.

Actually, I was just kidding about the 49 state license plate holes.

I believe the front and back plate mounts should have the same spacing, but my 4R came from Arizona and the NM plates fit. It wouldn't surprise me if California changed the hole spacing, however.

No, I have to use the inner holes on my MO plate, too.
Edit: Pretty sure those wide holes are for the long plates everywhere else but the US

I just looked at mine and it doesn't have the white nylon inserts. The indents must be for smaller hole patterns.

The back plate fits perfect. Little odd that the back fits but not the front.

Mine does not have those "white inserts" for the license plate mounting screws. I just have holes drilled into the black plastic for the mounting screws, just like you have done. I bought my 4Runner brand new and that's how it came from the dealer.

There is a tag bracket that attaches to bumper than tag attaches to the bracket. Don't see these brackets in Delaware to often cause we are not required to have front tags but I got one still in bag from dealer sorry cant have it. contact your local dealer to order one. I will check for part number tomorrow if interested.

I was able to just screw in the plate in the smaller designated spots so works fine now. Just thought it was odd and just wanted to make sure I wasn't losing my mind
