Front Recovery Points, GB discussion thread

I got some PMs and questions from my post in "what have you done today", and thought i'd start a discussion thread to answer any questions you may have on the points, how they mount, etc. If there is interest i'll start up a group buy on them.


Basically these came about because I wanted heavier duty recovery points, but didn't want to spend $1000+ on a full bumper, or spend $150 shipping a set over from Australia. Neither really excited me too much, so I decided to design my own. They are made in Houston, cut from A572-50 steel, and have been rated to 13,000 lbs per point. I do recommend using a bridle to distribute the load across both points to reduce stress to your frame and your equipment. These fit all 4th gens with factory bumpers and bolt on to the front of you frame. Toyota changed the tie down points from 2006-2009, so you must remove the factory tie down to use a hard shackle for those model years. It will work fine with a soft shackle without removing those factory points.

Included in the kit:
(2) 1/2" A572-50 steel recovery points, powder coated red
(1) hardware kit, class 8.8
(1) sweet sticker

They look awesome, but isn't that location on the crossmember still relatively weak? I always wondered if it would be possible to sandwich something like that between the bumper and bumper mount (top right in your second picture). It seems like that would tie in to the frame better. Then again, maybe this design would only cause the recovery point to bend and break since it would be perpendicular to the pulling force rather than parallel.

Sorry for the delayed reply, had ZERO service out at Lone Star Toyota Jamboree all weekend.

I thought about using that spot as well, the issue there is to clear the front bumper, your point would have to be REALLY long. From there you've created a lever, so with a hard pull you're going to be much more likely to bend your recovery point.

My design bolts to the welded crossmember, and you're only creating a lever when pulling off center. I recommend using a bridle in any recovery situation anyway, its just safer for your rig and your equipment, so sharing that load across both frame rails greatly reduces the likelyhood of a bend or break in either the point or frame itself.
