I'll do a little research and get back to you, it's only four bolts that hold it on, so if the 97 didn't have those holes I can imagine it wouldn't be too hard to just drill em. Let me look a bit first though.

I think it might only fit on the fat lip bumper. I've done some looking and havent seen anyone with the flat bumper running that skid.

Yeah I believe that is the case from what I read as well. It can be done for you, you just need a little modification.

The brackets that come with the skid plate for 99-02 4Runners will make it stick pretty far out past the 96-98 bumper. The 01-04 Tacoma brackets work perfectly for 96-98, though I'm not sure if you can get them separate from the plate; you might want to inquire at a dealer about that. Here's a pic of my 97 with the Tacoma plate (identical to the 4Runner one, except for brackets):



You can still purchase the whole kit new from Toyota, prices are in the $100-200 range depending on where you buy.

Here's a video I did on the install, as well, if you want to see how everything attaches and lines up.

You can try Craigslist to see if there is anything. I will take a look at my truck when I get home and see if there is a stamped part number that I can look up for the brackets. They might be available individually. The current part number for the whole kit is PT212-35040, for reference.
