FS:3rd gen - Front & Rear Diffs - 4.88s & ARB Air Lockers - Charlotte, NC

how were they with 255/85's

Perfect, IMHO. I was originally contemplating 4.56s for that tire size and the guys at ECGS advised going to 4.88s. I was very glad I listened to them.

I would think 33s - 35s would be the sweet spot for these gears. I would think 37s would be on the bubble, but definately doable.

I'm willing to ship them any particular packing method specified by a solid buyer, otherwise I'll be packing them up myself over the next couple of weeks and re-posting that thye are ready for immediate ship...

Packing up the Diffs

OK, so I decided to go ahead and pack up the front diff. It was such an odyssey that I decided to post up about it...

So the first thing I had to do was remove the ADD tube and the other support:

Then I made sure the vent tube and ARB inlet were protected from contamination. (Those are the ends of fingers from nitrile gloves zip-tied in place)

Then I bagged and zip-tied the diff:

Then I bagged it again:

So I've always heard people say that you could ship a diff in a five gallon bucket. Well, when it comes to a 3rd gen front diff, you can't. It too friggin tall:

So what WILL work? Enter the Action Packer!!!!:

Diff Shipping Continued...

So I knew I needed to put something on the bottom of the box to protect such a heavy item during shipping. What would work? Came up with the perfect solution:

Slab of MDF board on the bottom:

Followed by a 1/2 inch slab of ceiling tile material (where the shock absorption will come from):

And, finally, a slab of cardboard:

Once I got the three-part "floor" in the bottom of the box, I inserted the diff and then gave the box some MDF "sides" for added protection:

Then I filled in the voids with some fairly stout styrofoam I had laying around:

More styrofoam on top:

Then I topped it all off with a thick layer of bubble wrap:

On went the lid and now all I have to do is go bananas on it with the ole' Gorilla Tape:

How much does it all weigh, you ask:....... (69 lbs)

Rear Diff

So I finally found time to get the rear diff packed up. Here we go...

Here's the unit:

reardiff.jpg~original

So I finally thought I would be able to "pack it in a 5 gallon bucket," like so many people said I could. I went and bought a brand new bucket just for this purpose:

Well, guess what:

So for third gen front AND rear diffs, standard 5 gallon buckets aren't an option.

So I looked around to see what else I might be able to use and dug out this commercial-grade tote:

As I examined the tote for the purpose of shipping, I decided that it was probably too big and a bit too brittle for packing a heavy diff.

So, INSERT DRAMATIC MUSIC, yet another Action Packer steps in to save the day...

I really hope whoever buys these things appreciates the two action packers.

MORE TO COME...

So, similar to the front diff, I protected the ARB inlet from contamination:

Then I bagged and zip-tied it:

And I bagged it again:

Then I again constructed my patent pending (just kidding) ceiling tile/MDF/cardboard floor:

Perfect:

Then I inserted MDF side panels and snugged it up with more ceiling tile material:

Two more panels (clearanced for the top of the diff and air line) for the top:

Done deal:

Weighing it at a hefty 79.8 lbs (about 10 lbs more than the front)
