The major issue with shipping is the likelihood of damage. If you are spending $200 to $300 to have this hood shipped to you and it arrives damaged then everyone is unhappy about $600 to $700 spent for something that is now worthless. [MENTION=78895]DeathCougar[/MENTION] echoed these same thoughts on another post. Shipping companies are really rough on hoods. They stand on top of the hood box to get to other boxes. Apparently they can get around the damage liability by stating that the hood wasn't properly boxed or it wasn't packed in an OEM box. If I were shipping this hood it would have been sold within a few hours of me posting the for sale thread. I appreciate the interest, but I think that shipping a hood is too risky.

We need to figure out some type of transport system for items like this that are too large to ship. Let's pretend this hood was purchased by someone living in Alabama for example:

There will probably be someone on this forum heading east from Houston in the next few weeks. I could meet that person in Houston and hand off the hood. Even if this person is heading to Florida on I-10 you could meet him in Alabama somewhere along the Interstate. If we had a system like this we could save a lot of money and enable rare items like this to be transported around the country without fear of damage. Sort of reminds me of the "Ride Share" board we had back in my college days (mid-1980s) at Texas A&M. People would post where they needed to go for the holidays and somehow everyone got a ride home. Think about it - this was before the internet and cell phones!

I do have a sport hood on already. With all the crazy drivers out here and the rarity of this hood I figure it's to have an extra one for the just in cases.

Yeah I second the motion on not shipping the hood out. The delivery drivers are very rough on packages that give them a hard time. I went thought 4 hoods for my other car that came from the manufactures parts warehouse. 3 hoods came in with extra bulges and dings before I got a good one.

What a waste on time and resources that was for me and the manufacturer.

As far as I know there are about 30 Sport Hoods for sale in the country. These are just the ones that are advertised - I'm sure there are others. If you really want an OEM Sport Hood and see one in your area I would suggest getting it while you can.

I found it online. If it were me I would just say that a 4Runner owner and friend of yours mentioned that they might have a 1999-2002 4Runner Sport Hood with the hood scoop. Verify the color (OEM Sport hoods only came in black, green, silver, gray, blue and red) and condition. These Sport hoods can sell at a salvage yard for anywhere between $175 and $350. Confirm that it is OEM by the VIN#, TOYOTA brand stamped in steel, and the two factory instructional decals. Also ask if they will email you photos (top side and underneath). Ask if the points and corners of the hood are in good condition. Make sure there are no dents, dings, bends or depressions in the sheet metal. If everything sounds good I would get an idea on price and make arrangements to pick it up. You will always get a better price in person with cash.

So I got two more Sport Hoods today. With more practice I'm getting good at finding these - apparently it has become a bit of an obsession. This isn't going to work for everybody, but after driving around for 12 hours in Houston I figured out the best and fairest way to ship Sport hoods. Not counting the green hood (GREEN 001; already paid for) that I am holding for weekendclimber I still own four 4Runner hoods (One on my 4Runner, my flat hood that hasn't sold yet, SILVER 001, and SILVER 002). This is obviously 3 too many! After a lot of thought the only solution is to start shipping.

Below is the thread detailing how [MENTION=67746]Brentif[/MENTION] picked up, boxed, crated, transported, and shipped my Stellar Blue Sport hood from Long Beach, CA to Bryan-College Station, TX. I paid Brent $150 to do this after he showed interest in helping me get the hood to Texas. The salvage yard in Wilmington/Long Beach wouldn't ship the hood, so Brent made it possible for me to get it here. Brent would probably tell you that it was a lot of work for $150. If you read the thread below you will understand why. I paid $300 for my Stellar Blue Sport hood, $150 for Brent's services, and $141 for Greyhound to ship it from California to Texas - total of $591. This does not include the $50 I paid to get it buffed out or the extra time it took my mechanic to install (My 4Runner was already in the shop when Greyhound called to tell me that my hood arrived). It was worth it to me, but I already know that it is going to be way too much money for many interested forum members.

If you have someone like Brent who can pick up the hood for you and ship it I can hold it for that person (for months if necessary) as long as you have already paid for it. That is obviously the ideal solution and the easiest for me. If you don't have someone like Brent I will do everything Brent did for the same price I paid him... $150. You will Paypal me the price of the hood plus $150. You will select the shipping service that you want to use as well as pay for it.

There are many options for shipping. You are responsible for deciding which company ships your hood, how fast, and whether or not it is insured. I believe that Greyhound is one of the cheapest options. Another advantage of Greyhound is that the cargo bay location in buses makes it impossible for anyone to stand on your hood box or throw your box around within the cargo bay. For this reason I think that Greyhound is one of the better options. One bad thing about Greyhound is that the maximum they insure for is $300.

When I was checking for pricing with the usual suspects (Fedex, UPS, DHL) my estimates ranged from $200 to $300. I'll add some more information here later about what I know from researching shipping for my Stellar Blue Sport hood.

The $150 that you pay me covers shipping supplies, my time, boxing and crating, transporting your hood to the shipping company, and making sure that the paperwork is filled out correctly and that it is shipped. The company must be located or pick up in Bryan-College Station. We have 250,000 people here and as far as I know we have service from every major shipping company.

So far my crating and boxing plans include:
- A box option for an angled hood shipment (A flat box is too wide for Greyhound; For Greyhound total weight of box must be under 100lbs)
- A box option for a horizontal hood shipment
- Building and inserting a 2x4 crate tightly INSIDE either box
- Shrinkwrapping the hood to prevent scratches (Brent's idea)
- Attach a TO: shipping label to the hood inside the box
- Something like styrofoam on the points and corners
- Wrap hood completely with bubble wrap
- Secure the hood so that it doesn't move around
- Spray foam inside the box to help secure and protect the hood (Brent's idea)
- Other appropriate packing materials
- Plenty of packing tape on the outside of the box
- FRAGILE and HANDLE WITH CARE labels on the outside of box

Is this a solid plan to start with? Any other suggestions?

You could also go by body shops in the area and see if they would be willing to give you the boxes for the hoods they go through. You could put the hood in the box and then crate it was well if necessary for extra protection. Just a small suggestion.
