So I found a Silver Sport hood, but it was damaged. The hood was beyond repair, but the OEM scoop insert and screen was in perfect condition. The scoop is painted Millennium Silver, but you can easily paint it any color you want. Toyota is the only place where you can buy the scoop insert, screen, and related attachments. I believe that the scoop insert is $125 and the other items are about $25 for a total of $150. I will sell the complete OEM scoop insert for $90 plus $9 shipping for a total of $99.

I'm on the road in Dallas checking salvage yards - spending the night in a seedy motel room close to where all the salvage yards are. I hope to find another Sport hood in the morning. Finding that Silver one all dented to hell was so disappointing... at least I "rescued" the OEM insert.

We need to help [MENTION=102606]infamousRNR[/MENTION] find an OEM Thundercloud Sport hood in the SF Bay Area. That is a huge salvage yard market... eventually we will find one for him. Everyone keep an eye out.

I don't mean to clutter up your for sale thread, but my question may help your buyer. How exactly do you remove the scoop insert? Is it just those 4 nuts I see in the picture and then it pulls straight out, or are there some sort of clips and prying involved as well?

I've haven't removed mine yet, but the guy at the Salvage yard unscrewed the 4 nuts and slid it out - the entire process took about 30 seconds. The strange thing is how heavy the scoop insert is. I think it is made of a very dense fiber glass material.

FYI, that color of the hood is Desert dune not millennium silver. Just a heads up!

Most buyers are going to repaint the scoop insert anyway, but having seen the 4Runner in person I really think that it is Millennium Silver for these reasons:

1) The color of the hood looks a little flat in that photo. If you look at the paint on the drivers side fender you will see that it looks Millennium Silver and not Desert Dune.

2) Sport hoods were never offered in Desert Dune, but Sport hoods were offered in Millennium Silver - in fact from what I have seen there are more Millennium Silver Sport hoods than any other color.

3) The headlights are 99-02. Millennium Silver came out in 1999 and many buyers opted for this popular color in the next few years. There were relatively few Desert Dune 4Runners produced from 1999-2002 as compared to 1996-1998 when Desert Dune was probably the most popular color.

4) My first 4Runner was a 1997 Limited in Desert Dune. I am very familiar with Desert Dune - it is sort if a blend of a very light tan and silver. The paint on this 4Runner did not look like the paint on my first 4Runner from what I remember.

I appreciate the heads up, but I certainly don't want a Desert Dune owner buying this scoop insert and it not matching a Sport hood that he had painted Desert Dune. Having written all of this I could very well be wrong... I've seen about 100 (I'm not exaggerating) salvage yard 3rd Gen 4Runners in the past two days and I am tired as hell.

Oops my bad.. just looks a little faded to me and the bumper thats millennium silver looks to be darker than the hood. But it is a pic, and you're right on Toyota not making desert dune on the sport editions.

It still could have been an aftermarket or OEM hood painted Desert Dune. Because the hood was damaged I did not bother verifying that it was OEM. I just wanted the scoop insert because that has to be OEM (there is no aftermarket for the scoop insert).

I do think you have a very good eye because that dented hood looks a lot more like Desert Dune than Millennium Silver now that I take a closer look at it.

Looking at the pictures it does kinda look like a desert dune hood. Also the windshield has "1998" written on it. Maybe the previous owner swapped a sport hood and fat lip bumper onto his 98 Desert Dune? Seems kinda strange, but like you said, most owners would repaint to match their's anyway.

Good catch! I didn't even notice the 1998 on the windshield. It has 1999-2002 headlights, but who the hell knows. I have seen some 4Runners with the wrong year written on it (usually with a paint pen), but most of these salvage yard owners should have the correct data from the auction info, VIN#, title, etc. Most are labeled correctly from what I have seen.

One thing is for sure... if this 4Runner is in fact a 1998 it can't be Millennium Silver. Millennium Silver was not available until 1999.

Yeah it could be wrong info, but like you said if its a 98 then it is desert dune almost definitely. Barring some entire repaint or something... You could call on Monday and ask for the VIN number and verify the year yourself if you wanted.

Maybe this is a Frankenstein of a 4Runner... 98 paint and 98 label on the windshield, but 99-02 bumper, 99-02 headlights, and a 99-02 Sport hood.

Here is the scoop insert held in front of a factory-painted OEM Millennium Silver Sport hood (waiting to be shipped). As you can see the paint on the factory painted OEM hood scoops fades at a different rate than the paint on the steel hood. The scoop insert does look like it has a little tan in it compared to the hood and the installed insert.

If the scoop insert is Desert Dune (and it very well may be) it looks somewhat different from my old '97 Limited Desert Dune 4Runner pictured below. I agree that it is closer to Desert Dune than Millennium Silver. One thing to keep in mind is that we know for sure that the scoop insert was not painted Desert Dune at the factory since there were no Desert Dune Sport hoods produced by Toyota. This means that it is an aftermarket paint job and that it may not match the rest of the body panels on a factory-painted Desert Dune paint job anyway.

I don't think that anyone should buy this scoop insert based on it being Millennium Silver or Desert Dune anyway. If I had a Sport hood and this scoop insert on my old 4Runner pictured above I would probably paint the insert a contrasting color - maybe Silver to match the flares or a satin or flat black. Toyota charges $150 for a complete scoop insert and many dealerships like Toyota of Dallas have a $12 minimum shipping charge. That would be $162 shipped vs $99 shipped which is a decent savings for the same OEM part. The scoop insert from Toyota comes primer black, so you would have to paint that one as well.

I always pay cash when I buy salvage yard parts and most of the time that means that I don't pay tax on my purchase and don't get a receipt. The whole weekend is a blur. I remember this vehicle, but I do not remember which salvage yard this one is from. They all start to look the same after you visit 30 of them in two days! Unfortunately I have no way to get the VIN#.

Anyway, I do apologize if I misidentified the color (and it is looking like I did). Props to [MENTION=84229]jman11788[/MENTION] for spotting the error. I went to over 30 salvage yards in Dallas over the past 48 hours and searched through about 100 3rd Gen 4Runners. I should never assume, but seeing a 99-02 bumper, 99-02 headlights, and a 99-02 Sport hood I thought it was Millennium Silver.
