Fuel Evaporation Check - Run Time

Hello,
I have a 2014 4Runner with well over 100k on it (bought new). For the first time yesterday I was working in my garage and noticed what I would describe as an electric whir noise coming from the rear of the vehicle. I jumped on the forum and found others with a similar wonder about the sound. It had in fact been roughly 5 hours since the vehicle had been running, so I diagnosed it as the procedural Fuel Evaporation Check (not a problem).

However, my vehicle has been making this sound for what seem like close to an hour. Is that normal? I imagined this would be more of a 5 minute operation. Is my vehicle and this system operating properly? Thank you.

Mine has almost always lived outside, but the few times it was garaged the sound never ran for longer than a few minutes.

The fuel caps do go bad on these, mine made the fuel gauge malfunction.

Get a new fuel cap and see if it fixes things.

Thanks Big Landy. Luckily they're cheap, so I am going to throw $17 at it. I haven't had a check engine lights or degradation of fuel economy, but an inability to pressurize does make sense. Thank you!

Make sure to get Toyota OEM or it may not seal right.

I have a 2019 TRD off road and have noticed the fuel evap check well before the 5 hour mark. My wife and I went to the store tonight and it started about an hour after we returned. What I’m concerned about is that it has been going for over an hour. Any thoughts as to what this means or the cause? I have about 1/4 tank of gas at the moment, roughly 13k miles, no issues I’m aware of otherwise. Only mod so far is remote start.
