Fuel Filter Fun!!!

My 2002 with 148K was exhibiting classic bad fuel filter (hope not pump!) symptoms: takes about 3X as much cranking to start, surging at idle, hesitation when accelerating after coasting around corner at a stop sign. So I changed it and when I did I let the gas from the filter drain into a bucket. Here's what it looked like: (change those filters now and then :thumb3: )

Damn! That's nasty. When I changed the original filter in my '99 last year, it drained out perfectly clear.

Same here. I cut it open and the cardboard filter in it was surprisingly clean.

I'm hoping I don't have to drain the tank too! I'll know after driving it some. It does look worse than any I've seen.
