Fuel injector questions

I have 98 with 160000 on it and I brought it to the dealer because of bad shaking when I would go about 45 mph and rough idle and check engine light blinking. Dealer said my # 4 injector was bad and to replace it would be 700 and to do all6 would be 1200. I have other maint I need to do as well just wanted to see if anyone has had to replace there injectors and about how many miles they gotten on the original ones thanks

I have over 200K+ miles on my injectors but with any electronic device it can fail. You can always use a mechanics stethscope too listen to injectors to find which one is failing. That being said Ive never swapped my injectors on my 4runner but Ive done it hundreds of times on my mitsubishi's and some other cars. Its usually really easy. Injectors are pricey but not that bad. I bought 1200cc injectors for my car last time and it was like $340. You can replace them for a lot cheaper than what they quoted you.
 
Where do you live? There could be a private Toyota mechanic down the street who would charge a lot less.

Just make sure they use REAL Toyota parts; not from eBay!

I still have original injectors. If the dealer says it is the injector then it probably is, at least you know.
 
I live In sac and found a mechanic that would replace the bad one for about 520 and would do the valve cover gaskets which I need done too I'm just wondering if I should just replace the bad one or do all 6 I would hate to pay for the labor again but I looks like you guys have been good with your injectors at and over 200 k
 
That 700 price seems kinda steep to me. The injector on my old 01 Tacoma 4 banger failed and I got a new one put in around the 400 dollar range. If you're tight on money, I would just do the one bad injector. That 520 to fix the valve cover gaskets and injector seems like a fair price as my mechanic wants around 450 to just do the vcg's.
 
ive done fightman's injectors a few times and he did his own a few times as well. Unfortunately we had to keep redoing the job due to ****ty refurbs off ebay. My advice, dont get refurbs off ebay. Buy one locally at a car parts store. As nice as it is to change all 6, thats a lot of money. Ideally you would want 6 injectors that all flow the same. Id say change it yourself. Your first time around should only take 4 or so hours, and its really not hard at all. You dont need any special tools. A Simple socket set does the trick.
 
See fightman's thread and injector issues. I don't think he went to the dealer for troubleshooting though.

Although I am at higher mileage than 160k, don't know what that means, injector wise. I hope then last to 300k.

I figure there are a lot of factors that can kill an injector by 160kon miles & 12+ yrs usage, including the fuel used, environment ect.

Injector fail but not too often. I would trust a used 200k mile injector before an aftermarket one unless it was say a known performance injector company.

I looked online and you can get a new oem injector for around $140. I looked on ebay and looks like there are OEM used ones for around $20+.

I would email anyone first and make sure its OEM before ordering a used one but thats the way I would go. No reason to get a new one. You could buy a used one and pull them all then have a local company clean them or send them out if no one is local. We used to have a little setup with a fuel pump, some rails and a car battery. We would hook injectors up and run solvent through them to clean them. This is because we run e85 on our high boost turbo cars and they tend too gum up.

Its not hard to change an injector you just need to be smart and safe when working around fuel and anything under pressure, take safety first hand.
 
Thanks for all the advice I think I'm gonna go with replacing the bad one and cleaning the other 5 and getting the valve gasket replaced as well
 
did my injectors in the parking lot took like a hour, not too bad. injector from toyota was 120 i believe for a new one.
 
I followed the Yotatech link procedure all 5 times, and it took me a little less then 2 hours, on my last run at it.

I'd say get the injector from someone local. Mine were OEM refurbs from a company called CS Performance. I looked him up, and he runs a performance shop in Wisconsin, which builds high end engines for muscle cars and such.

Even these injectors had issues, I wouldn't recommend him. I'd say buy some from the Dealer or a local part store....this way, if something goes wrong with the injector, you can go to the counter in person... no exchange of emails.

Like the other's said, try to do it yourself... you'll save yourself a ton of money! I could of done mine for under $200.00! It cost me less, due to the issues I had with the injectors.... I got a partial refund.
