Funky RPM stuff

906-Runner

so recently my throttle had been getting all wonky on me, I have a 5-speed so sometimes I’ll coast to a stop so as not to down shift. But when I do the RPM gauge will drop down to about 1200 the sky rocket back up to around 3000 then promptly drop back down, this cycle continues to happen until the 4Runner gets to abou 15 mph then omit stays near 1200. Anyone out there have any ideas as to what might be causing this, I have no check engine light on and my throttle body is clean. I’ll post a video when I get the chance.

Im assuming your MAF is clean and working too?
Did the issue start after cleaning your throttle body?
Sometimes when you clean the throttle body, dirt gunk and cleaner can seep down into the TPS and cause it to get all messed up. This might be your issue

I didn’t actually clean my throttle body, it looked clean so I left it alone. I didn’t even think to look at the MAF but I’ll do that once I get a chance, I’ll also look into the sensor, thanks Yoter

The idle of 1200 is a little high as well unless you are not warmed up yet. My 3rz idles at around 700 rpm once fully warm, I would assume the v6 is similar.

Maybe this is another clue to point you in the right direction. I think a lot of idle issues are in the IAC valve but I'm not sure if the IAC could pass enough air to reach 3,000 rpm. Of course, any cleaning of the IAC should be done on the bench not on the truck to avoid getting gunk stuck down there.

The MAF sensor is very delicate so use caution when handling it, CRC MAF cleaner is what I use to clean mine. It needs a special cleaner, throttle body stuff is too strong and will damage the sensor. I just spray it and let it air dry (takes 5 seconds) maybe do that a couple times and it should be fine, whatever dirt is on the sensor will drip right off.
Cleaning the MAF would be a good first step, its easy to access and hopefully will help
