Anything bigger'n our 4Runner is just too darn big!

I fired off an message to the film's creator and said:
Hi,

I just watched your film on SUVs. I live in Scottsdale AZ - and it's largely true! People here really like their Escalades & huge Fords, and you can be sure they never see anything close to off-road, etc. Many seem to fit the stereotypes in your film. Another one they like here is their Range Rovers. Even though these are smaller, and a extremely capable off-roaders, I never see anything resembling off road dirt on them - never!

I do wonder about my SUV. It is a 2003 4Runner V8 4x4. The small V8 admittedly uses more gas (ugh!), but we got it mainly to pull a travel trailer. We camp frequently in some out of the way places, and I need the 4 wheel drive. I also sometimes go to off-road destinations with others, or just for fun. It's just my wife & I, and our dog loves the back area.

From your point of view, does this make me unfriendly to the environment? (My other car, which I use around town as much as possible, gets 32 MPG highway - 26 city, so hopefully they offset each other some.)

Thanks!

Tery

Here's what he sent back:
Tery,

I'm glad you liked my short film "SUV City".
If you notice in the film all the characters drive
full size (big) SUV's and have no reasonable need for
them (towing, hauling a bunch of people or things, or
even real off roading). Also, I have no problem with
mid size SUV's (Explorer, Pathfinder, 4Runner, BMW X5 etc.)
I would probably own one too if I was towing a trailer and
driving off road. That's what they're made for. I live in Santa Monica
California (SUV City) and the closest thing to off road is
when your driveway is wet from the sprinklers.

Take care,

Michael Kelley

I have always defended the right of people to drive whatever they want, but I have to admit it is amusing watching folks around here who are much like those in the film. Sometimes I don't wash the mud off mine right away so people can see it's an "honest" 4x4. (this makes me so much better than these other folks - right?)

Also, it's really funny that my with Diesel 4Runner I spend half the money my wife spends on gasoline for her Volkswagen Golf, due to better Diesel fuel economy and lower Diesel price.

Since we live in a third world country, many streets are far worse than your regular offroading in the U.S.

My wife's VW Golf has suffered a lot for not being an SUV.

That is an OUTSTANDING FIlm!!

This is a real problem around where I currently live (Southern California). Far too many "Poser" people in their "Poser" SUV's.
