Item Sku Aussie Locker XD-24930 For V6 and Turbo 4 Cyl (Only Turbo 4, not for straight 4 cyl use XD20830) xd-24930

Just pulled the trigger today so I don't have an expected delivery date yet. I'm excited to get it but even more excited because I have the grand ambition to record a video of the installation and make a how-to on it. We'll see how well that goes and hopefully it doesn't become a how not to video....

Im subscribed, im about 4 to 6 weeks out from ordering mine. So ill be watching and see what's involved. Hopefully it can be done at home as most claim. I've swapped 3rd members in my 92 Runner so that's an easy 30 minutes to remove one.

I talked to catalina34 about the installation to get a feel for the level of technical difficulty. He said it changing a front half axle was harder than the Aussie. I also read this article Aussie Locker and got Torqmaster to send me the Aussie locker installation instructions ahead of time. The Aussie locker installation instructions are not correct according to catalina34 but the weblink is. I'm going to call Zuk this week to ask him about checking backlash. He describes how to do and shows a picture but I'm still not sure what I'm trying to accomplish when I check it. Youtube didn't offer much help, but everyone says to check it, so I'm going to figure it out prior to making the video. I really want to write this up in the way that the rear axle seal was done and have a youtube link too for other newbs like me. We'll see how it goes....

It's way easy, guys. I just did this a couple days ago, installing my Spartan. You just need a set of sockets and combo wrenches, a torque wrench, a 3/16s pin punch, and maybe a cheater bar. And beer. There's an install link on Zuks site, and you probably won't even need that. I'm pretty sure your axles are the same as mine, so...

Rear axle on stands
Drain rear diff
Remove wheels
Disconnect brake lines and ebrake cable
Unbolt axle flange and pull out axle shafts (all the way, don't pull partway and leave them or they'll muck up your axle seals)
Disconnect rear driveline and move aside
Disconnect third member and pull (careful, it's heavy)
Follow the install instructions - basically, unbolt the arches over the adjuster caps on either side of the carrier. Pull out the carrier. Unbolt the ring gear. Punch out the pin holding the center shaft. Watch diff fall apart. Put back together with the locker instead of the side gears. If you want to, take the third to a driveline shop to make sure the lash is still good (but you shouldn't have to)
Put it all back together.
Drive around listening to it "click click click" and giggle like a schoolgirl. :bravo:

It took me about 8 hours over 2 days, but I was screwing around and going slow. It'll go faster if you've got a clean organized space to work in. I don't, so that slowed me down some to.

Good luck!

Fastrob - I had a pleasant surprise on my doorstep yesterday when I got home from work. Took two days to arrive after ordering. I'm kinda screwing with you here since you subscribed. You're probably expecting pictures of something more informational and related to the install, but all you got were crappy pictures of a box. LOL. I'll be putting this in the weekend of 3/24-25 and should finish the right up pretty soon after that. I'll keep you posted.

once you get the 3rd out, rest is cake.

pics, pics and more pics. this is one mod i'd love to do but am a bit weary about pulling apart my diff.

I got as far as getting to the driveshaft last night and threw together a rough edit of a video up to that point. I left in some incorrect info that I'll put together some subtitles on that clearly state that what I am doing wrong. ie. hitting the hub with a hammer.....

here's the link to the video

If anyone can offer some constructive criticism on the video I'd appreciate that too. Recording and editing it takes more time than just doing the work so I'd like to be efficient and not show more than necessary.

1. You need to finish painting your garage
2. Talking about safety and using a hi lift jack doesn't go hand in hand (not that it's that unsafe). Also, you need safety glasses and hand protection if you're going to talk safety.
3. Delete the part about the drum
4. You don't have a 1/2" ratchet?
5. Basically the first 2:58 of the video is a waste.
6. Always loosen the fill cap first.
7. Almost stripped it.
8. Like I said above, you can cut into where you drain the diff oil.
9. Don't take my criticism personally, take it with a grain of sarcasm and truthfulness.

Writeups take A LONG TIME.

I would recommend setting up the camera stationary when you put the aussie in. And taking pictures if possible. I think a lot of times pictures are better than video for the step by step DIY guy.

1) Agreed. It's been on the list since I bought the house in 2008. I keep coming up with other projects that are more fun/useful that rise to list.
2) Good thoughts. I'll drop the safety stuff because I don't want to wear gloves or glasses.
3) Ok. Done.
4) No. 1/4" and 3/8" but not 1/2". Really dumb oversight since I bought a bunch of other stuff at harbor freight yesterday.
5) Ok. Deleted.
6) Agreed. I'll put in text box that says this in the video. I don't know why I forgot that yesterday.
7) It looked worse than it was in terms of stripping it. No rounding whatsoever.
8) Not taking it personally at all. I want the video to be useful to everyone on the community and don't want extra footage that is useless.

I think I can take still shots out of the video on my program since it's high def so I'll do some of that too for the writeup.

Thanks for the feedback.

No problem!

I think the pictures and video would help out a lot of peeps. Personally, I like to follow pictures because I can print it out and then follow it.

If you could catch the clicking noise once you get it installed, I'd be interested to hear. But I know that maybe difficult.

Good luck with the remainder of the install!

Don't forget to spell check before you make fun of someone.... ;)

If I'd spellchecked, it would have come out re****ed. And that's re****ed. ;)

Nah, I've got no problem with Ohio, I'm just contractually obligated to take a swing at all things Big10. Comes with being born on the Left Coast, you know.

Status Update: E-brake disconnected, brake line disconnected, axles removed, driveshaft disconnected, differential removed. Aussie should be installed tonight. Taking videos and pictures takes more time than I thought it would

Status Update: Got the locker installed in diff, diff & driveshaft back on, tested operation with wheels back on and axles back in. Still have to reconnect brakes, fill the diff with fluid and tighten everything to spec.... Should be driving around by the end of the night.
