If GZ felt threatened, why did he step out of the car? The police are on the way, why make himself exposed to the "threat"? Common sense will tell me, drive away or at least stay inside your car, lock the doors, motor running and ready to leave if the situation gets worse.

Timeline of events indicates it wasn't until AFTER Z stepped out of his vehicle that the altercation took place. Could it be plausible that he wasn't threatened until after the sucker punch and MMA mount?

My statement about the burden of proof is based on multiple articles from this morning. I don't have direct legal knowledge but the articles were convincing.

But my point was, in manslaughter the state only has to show negligence or the lack of regard for another's safety which results in death (or something like that).

Yes but they have to prove he acted with neglect leading to the death. That is the strong burden. As someone who has carried a loaded firearm, guarding a post several times a week (for years) when in the military, I believe that a situation can go from just shady to life threatening in seconds. If T grabbed for the gun then Z's life was at risk. There is no video footage so we can't proof intent or neglect or really anything to counter a self defense claim.

If I was on watch and someone was grabbing my partners gun I may on have a few seconds to pull my gun out and shoot. It all can happen so fast.

Again I am not a cop.

Not sure what you're doing there, but don't make the mistake of thinking this is a big mountain. The park is beautiful. We walk our 4 dogs and 1 kid there often on the hiking trails.

I'll be supporting the National Park in the Civil War 150th anniversary. And yeah, it's east coast, so no real big mountains- just big hills...

As I read that, he means they threw a lesser charge in very late in the trial when it has become apparent you're not winning murder #2. Not fair as Z wasn't able to defend those charges until their final arguments. That's the argument as I understand.

it definitely seems like a last minute jab by the prosecution. Reading over what happened today I don't think it seems like they have a good shot at the M2:

"said the profanity-laced language he used to describe Trayvon Martin in a non-emergency call with dispatchers - f---ing punks and these -holes - showed ill will and spite."

doesn't seem particularly convincing to the impartial juror.

I know it isn't recent but there are plenty of older folks on this thread. It is definitely one of top all time dramas. I saw it for first time a few months ago and was blown away by performances. IMDB gives it a 8.9/10 out of 250,000 votes.

What exactly does this trial highlight that is wrong with our justice system? I mean like seriously name a few things specifically.

For the biggest issue highlighted by this case is that Z had to raise $100k to get a decent defense. Most citizens can't raise that kind of money, and it makes one wonder how many innocent people end up in jail (with us paying for their prison time btw).

Definitely the insane costs of decent defense, also the inability of the common person to defend him/herself because of a bunch of technical BS. Justice shouldn't depend on money. Think about bail (which we don't have in DC) which entirely depends on income and assets. Rich people can stay out of jail and pay for a bougie lawyer while poor people are often stuck with whoever the court gives them and have to sit in jail because they can't post bond? :shrug:

the adversarial nature of it wherein no one is concerned with justice but both sides are concerned with proving something specific instead of finding truth - often, like you said, putting innocent people in jail and as I often see at the PD, putting guilty people back on the street. How so much of trials are based on twisting and manipulating the truth into a lie

the stagnation of our laws in relationship to the advancement and progression of society, times change so should laws.
