Garage Door Openers

I'm looking for suggestion or stats on garage door openers for our new house. In our first house we started with the standard chain driven Lift Master and rode that until it started to die. I replaced it with a top of the line Chamberlain with belt drive and battery backup (nice feature to have in hurricane season in Florida). While it was a nice unit, it chewed through light bulbs for some reason, the battery backup needed replacing every couple of years, and it still wasn't quiet enough for me. The only option this builder had was a standard Genie and if I'm going to spend $450+ on an opener, I'm going to get exactly what I want.

So, any suggestions?

Also, since I'm fairly new to cold climates, I'm wondering if there's any reason to avoid belt driven vs chain.

Those are pretty noisy though right? I probably sound high maintenance but the rental we're in now has one that shakes the bedroom when you open it.

That reminds me, I need to get an extra remote for the bedroom. :frisky:
 
Mine was a bit noisey till I braced it half way along the shaft. Then I spray with WD-40 every 6 months or so. Pretty quiet but my garage is detached so I couldn't say definitively.
 
There's a new model being marketed on the radio here. The announcer brags about its ability to lift 10 feet per second and how quiet it happens to be. If I can remember the name of it the next time I hear the commercial, I'll report back with a name.

Haha - I was SURE it was 10 feet until you asked the question and I actually thought about it. :confused:

Haha no worries.. I got a good chuckle trying to imagine this 10 fps trap door in front of my house.

I did search and saw a Genie TriloG that advertises up to 10 inches per second. Maybe that's it?
 
Where's [MENTION=69441]Dawg4Runner[/MENTION] when you need him? Surely with all those toys he finds himself opening and closing the garage throughout the day. :driving:
 
not much help from me, but if I were getting a new one right now it would certainly be a Liftmaster with wifi capabilities. I love the idea of being able to open/close with a smartphone or computer and being able to see if the door is open or closed using same.

They all seem to be headed that way. From what I've read the Chamberlain interface is called MyQ and is an add-on.

LMAO! You know me well.:D. I have a LiftMaster Elite Series DC Battery back-up on one door and a Sears Craftsman on another. The LiftMaster is on the main door and is belt driven. It's so quiet that I don't hear it open when the wife comes home. The Craftsman is older and is screw drive and the thing sounds like an airliner landing when it opens. I agree that the DC battery backup is a hassle and has to be replaced every few years but it sure is nice to have when the power's down. I replaced mine about 2 months ago for $35 after 4 years. Well worth it IMO.

With the LiftMaster Elite you can also securely monitor and control your door from your smart phone.

I have the Chamberlain Whisper Drive Plus with Evercharge battery system. A fantastic opener that's very quiet. We have a very heavy solid insulated steel sandwich door and use that as the main entrance to the house so it is literally open/closing 10 or more times per day. We've had it about 4 years and its been rock solid. Paid a bit more for it but its worth every penny.

The battery system was great as well when we were without power for several days after Sandy.

HIGHLY recommend.
