My wife's b*tching is way louder than any opener I've seen. :becky:
I'm also looking for a door opener and I think I'll buy the liftmaster 8500. My only concern is about programming my 4Runner's homelink system with it. Do you know if it works as for any other system? I read somewhere that this new liftmaster system comes with a new generation of coding only compatible with 2012 and up vehicule ? Is that true ? I own a 2010 4Runner

We also have two genie screw drives and they are from the 80s or 90s. They can be a bit loud sometimes, but that's probably just because they are that old. The only problems we have had with them is that the plastic cover rattled (we took it off and it is a lot quieter) and the light socket messed up, but for whatever reason, when my dad tried to back out of the garage with the hatch up on the 4runner, it pushed up the motor some and it is a lot quieter now.
This is totally unrelated to the openers, but we have had two garage door springs break from them being 20+ years old. Just make sure all the cabling looks correct and that they will not hurt someone or something if they break.

I put in Chamberlin Belt drive in 2006. When our granddaughter came to live with us in 2010 we needed something quieter, her bedroom is above the garage.
I went with Overhead door belt drive for both openers. If it was not for the door hardware making noise you would never hear these openers. The cold has not been a problem with these.
Something to think about-
thieves are learning to open garage doors using various technologies.
The next time I replace my openers I will add security to the requirements.

I saw some recent and mixed reviews on the LiftMaster so I'm leaning toward Chamberlain again... the 1.25hp whisper drive with MyQ (I feel like I need a Tim Allen grunt here). Plus I really like the clean look of their mounting kit.

As I've read more about maintenance and operations, I'm thinking the noise with my old unit was due to the tracks. When they originally built the house they put in popcorn ceilings instead of the double knockdown I paid for. So I made them redo it and they had to scrape all the popcorn in a mostly finished house and they really half-assed the cleanup. I think a combination of that and bad lubrication may have been the culprit. Most other people seem to really like the Chamberlain units.

Technology aside I've heard criminals will even drill a doorknob hole in a garage door to access the emergency release cord for quick access.

I buy the cheapest for 90-100 bucks (brand varies) and install them myself.
The shortest I have had one last was 3 years, the longest over 8. The one in our house currently is over 15 years old, I'm not replacing it until it breaks.

Against my better judgement, I decided to go with installation through Home Depot for $99. I figured I would have my hands full with other projects and it would be nice to have someone else get this installed in the meantime. Of course, you pay in store and they say they'll call to book it. When they called 3 days later, the earliest appointment was 10 days away. The guy installed it today (looks like he is with a local Overhead Garage Door office) and did, in my opinion, a total hack job on the wiring and mounting kit. There were some frayed exposed wiring, no tape used, didn't run it in the channels (which was the whole reason I bought the stupid chamberlain kit), cut the lead wires from the prewire too short which is probably the reason it looks awful, mucked up my clean walls, one of the trim pieces is missing altogether and he put a bolt through the middle of the other one to attach it. :smow:
I know.. it's a garage.. and an opener... doesn't have to be pretty. But it looks like pooh. I'll probably ask HD to replace the missing trim pieces and go get some wire to do it right.

The bad news is Home Depot subs out to the lowest bidder. Its usually a crapshoot whether you get quality work or a hack job. More often then not its the latter. The good news is that Home Depot is pretty good with taking care of unhappy customers. A friend of mine went through Home Depot for a kitchen remodel. It also included some under cabinet kitchen lighting. It was a total hack job. She took photo's from every angle, documented all the hacked areas and complained to HD. It took awhile but they ended up refunding the money for the lighting job and a partial credit on the cabinets. She then went out and found a sub on her own. He just shook his head when he saw the original work, then did the job right. Don't be afraid to go to the District Manager if the store isn't taking care of you.

I was hoping I landed one of the better subs when I saw the Overhead logo on the truck. I'd always heard good things about them. I would have been pissed had I gotten this kind of quality if I paid them $400+ directly. I went to HD tonight and they were willing to dig into the issue but I just asked them for the trim pieces he screwed up and I picked up some new wire. Karma is a b!tch though... I noticed the guy left his 20v li-ion battery and charger plugged in in my garage.
