Gargling nails

I got this rattle that comes n goes on my 88 4runner Seems to come around when the engines warmed up and has been driven around. It can get pretty loud.

Its loudest at low rpms. I have noticed the rattle while not in gear as well.

Not the timing chain..

Any ideas where I could look? Ill work on recording the noise if necessary.

Does gargling nails sound anything like marbles in a coffee can? Check your timing, it might be pinging. If that's good, you'll have to narrow down the source, tell us what area of the engine compartment it's coming from.

Another common noise maker is the valves, they may need adjusting.

As will a disloged or partially cracked or broken catalytic converter element.

More of a sharp metal on metal noise. I had the valve adjustment done so not that.

Someone mentioned to me it could be the exhaust heat shield. So im goin to check that today. If thats not it ill get a recording up

Last guy had replaced the cat, dont think its that.

Just a very unattractive noise dammit!

I havent quite figured out where the noise is coming from, cause it comes an goes. But is quite loud.
