Gas mileage

Hello all,

Finally found me a 2001 Limited, 170k miles, 4x2, stock, well taken care of.

Right after purchase, the low fuel light came on, filled up within 7 miles.
16.676 gallons
Drove 1 tank full & I drive very sensibly. No fast takeoffs, slamming on brakes, etc. It has a louder muffler than I am used to, so I was able to easily judge how I was driving.
At around 55 the rpm's drop to ~1750, & cruising at ~ 63mph, the rpm's are just below 2000.


Low fuel light came on at 340.7 miles, filled up at 348.0 miles.
16.549 gallons

21.03 mpg.
Hopefully I will continue to get this type of mileage.
Oh, this is with all 5 windows down & the sunroof open.

Wish I was getting 21 mpg! I'm getting around 17-18mpg combined, 35/65 city/hwy miles.

What brand gas are you guys using? For those of you getting less milage per tank I'm guessing your using cheap stuff like Arco? I tried Arco before but it's definitely worth spending few extra bucks for Chevron. I got 250 miles out of a full tank using Arco and 350! Yesterday before my fuel light stayed on on one of my cars, and when I filled up I noticed I filled my tank with about 15 gallons and my tank is 18.5 so I still had about 3.5 gallons to go. I could of easily hit 400 Miles! If I pushed. I woulda got stranded had I pushed it but 400 miles is 400 miles.

You would have gotten stranded if you drove another mile or so. Our trucks don't use all the gas in the truck and the amount you said are right on par with the amount of "unused reserve" that never gets used. There's a whole lot of theories on why Toyota designed it like this but I'd be willing to bet they did it for a good reason.

I feel your pain as I am in the same boat. I keep thinking something is wrong with my truck but it runs so good I just can't imagine what it might be.

Your lucky you have a good working gas gauge. One trip I'm on e and fill up is 14gal. Next empty I can fit 16gal. One time I had 1/8th tank and fuel light barely flashed once. Pull into driveway and run out of gas. Actually thought motor died because gauge showed I had gas. Fun.

cruising at ~ 63mph, the rpm's are just below 2000.

This is the secret for everyone that wants good mileage. I get around 21 on the highway (road trips) with the cruise set to 67mph with 32" BFG K02's. It was 23-24 when it was 2WD with the smaller passenger tires (factory 28.9" tires).

Sounds about right. :yo: I get the same when I can cruise at 60+ mph consistently in my 2WD too.
Sadly, with my usual stop and go commute though, I have to live with the 16.8 average. Oh well. Could be worse.

The 95 4x4 Tahoe I sold to get my 4Runner was getting 8mpg. :tape:

Your commute is everything. I went from driving about 90% highway miles getting 18 MPG to about 30-40% highway miles and it dropped to 14-15 MPG. It's not really fair to just compare MPG's since there's so many variables, including how much ethanol or other additives are in your gas.

i ran out of gas when I first got the rig, dumped in a 2gl can on the road, drove maybe 1/2 mile and put in 15.2 at the pump which yields roughly 17.2 gallons of useable fuel.

I get about 21 highway in my 2004 Sport Edition 2X4. I get around 17 or 18 driving good in the city. 16 when driving like a maniac.
