Gear break in procedure. Quick question.

So I am about to break in a new set of ring and pinion gears next week. I've read all of the write ups on break in procedure but I have one outstanding question.

I know it says the first 20 or so miles you only do very light driving as they heat up, then park and let them totally cool down. I know you are supposed to not tow anything and change the oil after 500 miles.

If I break these gears in slowly for the first let's say 50 mi, could I then drive the vehicle on the highway in the first 500 mi? Or should I stay at lower speeds for the first 500 miles?

also, I am breaking these 5.29s in with dyno lucas 85-140. What weight and brand do you guys recommend for after the break in period? Stick with dyno? synthetic? same weight?

First 100-120 miles are critical, no hill climbs, no towing. After that avoid a lot of stop and go and hill climbs. Freeway miles are good. You'll know within the first 50 miles if something is wrong. After that just go easy on them. There's not SPECIFIC number you have to hit.

Thanks. I am going to break them in the week of around town slowly doing 10 mi or less at a time. I have a 45mi drive that weekend, thats why I asked. Its all highway so ill just put no faster than 60.

When I talked to Nitro gear they said you don't have to baby them, just don't drive like a jerk. You'll know pretty quickly if something is wrong, if you do the first 50 miles and no issues just drive normally for at least 300-350 miles and just check your diff fluid for abnormal coloring or shavings.

10 miles might not be enough.
you have to get them hot, then allow then to cool down. im not sure if they will get hot enough in 10 miles.

Ill just do a few miles at a time then check them. I have some routes planned out with stops along the way.

Maybe I still don't know enough about gearing ratios lol but what size tires do you have to run 5.29?

He is most likely going from 4.10 to 5.29. Pretty much the same as 3.73 to 4.88. Most likely running 35+.

Remember you have the front and rear to break in...

Heat cycles is the key.

I ran 4wd on straight roads to help break the front in. Just focus on keeping your speed and distance down the first 4-5 cycles. After that, just drive normally and avoid towing for the first 500mi. Change the diff oil and you should be good. I run the Lucas non syn 85-140 at all times. The gears will continue to shed metal paste for quite some time.

I am only breaking in the rear. My diff exploded due to piss poor set up from the shop that built it. I run 37s
