I was wondering if I can switch the gear oil to synthetic from what is in there. I would like to do both front and rear diffs and the transfer case if possible. Thanks for any advice. Allen

Lots of guys on here that do their own maintenance switch all three (front diff, rear diff, and transfer case) of these cavities out with synthetic... plenty of DIY threads on here and 120 for this as well (two below as an example). I would say make sure you are able to remove the fill plug before pulling the drain plug on all three and also make sure you're level when you do it as well (ensures the level is correct during the refill portion)... remove the spare tire for more access (makes things a lot easier for the rear diff), and front skids are a must for the front and transfer. You'll need a bottle pump that fits the gear oil you select as well.

Royal Purple is the way to go.
After changing out the oil in my t-case, and front & rear diff, I no longer feel any sort of "clunk" when changing from 2wd to 4wd. there used to be a very small clunk but it is now nonexistent and the transition is smooth as butter

Royal Purple makes it synthetic. I have it in mine. Expensive but worth it to me. However, the rest is correct. Many have opted to run 75w90 in the rear end.

yeah, definitely more expensive than others, but if you're only going to change the gear oil every 75k-100k miles, you might as well spend a bit more and go with the good stuff!

i dont think the price difference is THAT bad. I got 7 quarts of Royal Purple 75w90 for about $105-$110 on Amazon with free shipping. If you went with other brands, it's still about $80 for 7 quarts. Extra $20-$30 is not that bad if youre only changing it once every 80-100k miles, I only average about 12k a year so I won't have to deal with it for another 8 years

ive read that if you dont tow anything or go offroading, you could go 100K+ miles between changing the oil. towing/offroading, I'd change it 60K-80K miles

I've found the same info. As easy as it is to do yourself I would change it more often as ^ he stated.
