gear ratio

I have sorted through many threads here and on other site trying to determine the gear ratio of my 2000 4Runner 2WD V6 SR5. I'm told my ring and pinion is bad and hence am swapping rears.

The A/TM code is A01A/A340E. The local dealer was no help. Various charts have different information to decode this. All I've read is it may be 4.10 or 4.30 but can not determine which. I am going to try the 'spin test' I found on here by am concerned I will not be able to tell the difference between .10 or .30 rotations. Another variable is whether I have limited slip, a 'locker' or not, or any other option needed to know when talking to the salvage yards.

If anyone has first-hand knowledge of this code please advise. I welcome all comments that may get me the correct information.

It's easy to tell if you have a locker or not, on the driver's side of the third member, if you have a locker there will be a large solenoid with a bunch of wires running to the drivers side of the frame.

And the best way to determine your gear ratio is take the diff out, count the teeth and divide the teeth on the pinion to the teeth on the ring gear.
 
Thanks for the quick responses. It is appreciated but I've been to both the sites a_young240 posted and they have different information based on my code. The 'brian894x4' site at least has the correct letters and numbers for my code but the result contradicts every other post I've read what I should have. The 'brian' site says I would have a 3.42 and I have not read that number anywhere. (I've read 3.30 and quickly found out that wasn't 4Runner).

I may need to have the shop do the teeth count prior to scanning the salvage yards. I was hoping it would have been more cut and dry and didn't what to spend that time and money. Oh and thank you UF-- I do not have a locker.

Please if anyone wants to chime in I welcome it. Thanks!
 
just jack it up and count the revolutions.
you'll be able to tell between 4.10, and 4.30.
thats a 1/4 rotation.

also, do it several times just to be sure.

I finally did the spin test. I got slightly different results each time;
--an average of 3.7 to 3.85. That threw a wrench in the most commonly posted 3.90 or 4.10 ratio for my year/model.

Then I came across a post linking http://www.sonoransteel.com/include...eel/TechArticles/1996-2004ToyotaGearRatio.pdf. The model code indicates a 3.73 ratio which closely matches my tests as well as a couple other posts I've read. Best part is the salvage yard has a 3.73 in stock. I just hope theirs is marked accurate and the rest of this mess is smooth sailing.
