Figured a lot of you are like me and are fans of many sports. Well, we need a thread to discuss any and everything sports! Just remember to keep it respectful and civil.

Both NHL and NBA playoffs are under way.

NHL playoffs are some of my favorite stuff! I'm a big Pens fan (until the day Seattle gets a team). They looked good in their first series, but have a tough challenge with the Caps next. Should be fun to watch. Game 7 of the Blackhawks/Blues should be a good one too.

Honestly, I don't watch the NBA much anymore since we lost the Sonics. That and I think there's not much excitement early in the playoffs. But I'll definitely start watching more as it rolls on.

What else? NFL draft? [MENTION=65653]aha2988[/MENTION], what do you think of the whole Norman deal? Obviously there's a part of me that's not sad to see him go being he's a stud. But there's also a side that loved the rivalry. It only added to have something to talk about on both sides of the ball. Cam vs Russ. Sherman vs Norman. I haven't read much on the whole deal, but was there something about him not wanting to sign the franchise tag and was going to potentially holdout?

I think it sucks!!! looking at the details it boils down to a cruddy greedy agent. Norman wanted to play for the panthers! As well he was satisfied with his 13.9 mil, guaranteed under the franchise tag. What he was not satisfied with nor are any foot ball players for that matter, was the lack of an extended contract. If Norman got a career ending injury this season under the franchise tag, he'd be let go no future money to back him up or anything. He was simply trying to get a future lined up for himself. Gettleman was also trying to lower his sallary durring contract talks. The 13.9 was more than what the panthers were willing to offer in a yearly contract. In last minute talks Norman tried to offer a one year market value contract right at the last minute which would have put him at 13.9 mil for the year based on the frachise tag value, but gettleman rescinded the tag and basically said no thanks, best regards. I think gettleman's banking on the 14 mil sallary cap to open up options in the draft, as well as future trade deals.

Washington offered up 15mil a year for a multi year contract. Norman and his horses are headed to washington state. I'll be sad to see him go but It will make watching the redskin games more exciting for me.

which basically leaves us blowing in the wind looking for a secondary. Pretty sure everyone that was on "thieves ave." is gone :sadwave: no more harper, tillman or norman...

Yeah. NFL salary caps and contract structures are such BS. Especially considering how much money the NFL makes and what these guys put on the line out on the field. It's too bad too. Because it breeds stuff like this. Good teams get broken up and you lose those groups of players that you really like together.

Definitely looking forward to Chicago St Louis tonight.

LA vs SJ was also a good series. Surprised by the outcome though as the sharks have a history of choking.

hard to say the got "robbed" when they gave up 5 goals. no doubt, they may have been denied a legit 5th goal themselves; but they weren't robbed. do a better job keeping the puck out of the net. 4 goals should have been enough.

^but they only lost by one goal.

I say robbed because it looks like a legitimate goal to me. To be eliminated in playoffs, something these guys have been preparing for all year and most of their lives, by a single goal that from what I can see should have counted but was disallowed by the referee's is robbery IMO.
 
right. as i clearly pointed out in the post, they scored 4, and gave up 5. i don't deny that for that team, it sucks. but they weren't robbed. do a better job keeping pucks out of their own net.

vancouver was robbed. by tim thomas.
 
I guess we have a different definition of the term 'robbed'. To me it has nothing to do with how many goals they gave up. To me its not getting something that should have been theirs.

So in my mind they scored 5 and gave up 5, but were 'robbed' of the 5th goal by the officials.

I'm genuinely curious now as to how you see the term 'robbed' being applied.
 
you believe the wild were robbed because they weren't awarded a 5th goal. that presumes they would then have scored the 6th goal, rather than the stars. there is no way to know which team would have scored the 6th. therefore, they weren't robbed.

now, tim thomas absolutely robbed the canucks of a stanley cup by denying them time after time in that series, not allowing the canucks to score many goals on boston's ice, and shutting them down in game 7. that's robbery. boston outscored vancouver to the tune of 23 to 8 in that 7-game series. ROBBERY.

mistakes in officiating are part of sports. i HATE instant replay. it isn't consistent, and it slows the games (whichever sports have it) down. i believe it has adversely affected officiating in the nfl, because referees now see replay as a crutch to make difficult calls.

i hate replay in the nhl. why have a goal judge? i think the offsides review is a joke. offsides has been missed thousands of times in the past. so what? it's part of the game, and a split-second judgment of the action. i don't care if the play is on-sides or off-sides if it's so close that a person cannot tell in real time. same goes for other sports.

I feel like you could say they were "robbed" of what would have been a game-tying goal? I actually missed that game as well as the highlights, so I don't know when that potential goal occurred.
 
I'm not presuming anything beyond what happened. They scored and it wasn't counted, therefore they were robbed. You seem to define robbery as being outplayed...?

To each their own i guess, as I personally love instant replay and would like to see it used more often. I think getting the call right is the most important thing. LOL @ goal judges. The number of times I've seen them flip on the goal light when no goal was scored is ridiculous. It certainly creates an open door for corruption.

Not sure why you keep bringing up the Vancouver Boston series from five years ago...

I agree too. With all the tech, might as well get it right. But it will always be a tricky thing because you want to get it right, but you want to be able to do it in a short period of time. One place I find it's real tricky is with what is deemed a catch in football. It can come down to such a judgement and plays can look completely different when slowed way down.

it fit the definition. conversely, it would have been robbery for vancouver to win the series with only 9 goals scored in 7 games (they only scored 8 for the series, but were shut out in the 7th - therefore, to win with 9, they'd have had to shut out boston for a 3rd time 1-0). as it is, 8 goals is the all-time fewest scored in a 7 game series (and 6 games, too).


i'm sure lots of people like instant replay; and i'm sure it's here to stay. i still dislike it, and because it is limited in what it can "correct", i don't believe it should be used at all. the "not enough evidence" in itself should be enough to get rid of replay, because it renders those plays possibly incorrect yet standing as-called. sports are not played in slow-motion. no need to determine outcomes that way.

After what the Wild have done all season I'm glad it's finally over so then the heads will roll in the locker room where they should have done something instead of firing Yeo. That goal last night was not a goal and they made the right call. Someone doctored photos and a different camera angle shows it crossed but the overhead cam shows that maybe 95% of the puck crossed. It needs to cross the line completely for it to be a goal. Game 2 of this series when Dallas and the wild were tied 1-1 and Dallas scored on a fluke goal that should've been overturned and reviewed better.

Chicago needs to survive this first! Hope they can make it a good game, but I somewhat secretly want them to lose. That way we'd at least have a new Cup winner other than the Kings or the Hawks. Just don't tell my friend that. He's a HUGE Blackhawks fan.
