Getting a '94 4x4 truck, 22RE

I just made a deal with a freind....getting his "extra" truck in a trade. Trading a '94 25hp Yamaha outbaord for his '94 Toyota Ext Cab 22RE 4x4 with 240k....pretty excited. I've owned a 3L v6 (truck) and currently own a 3.4 in my 3rd gen T4R....looking forward to owning the 22RE....although I've never worked on one before....Any common issues or problems I should no about? He is the second owner and the orginal owner and I are all long time freinds. It'll be somewhat of a project I expect as the truck was used sparingly over the last 2 years, he used it as a 2nd or 3rd vehicle....Anyway, thanks for any pointers or tips....I figure at the least it'll need a battery and a throttle body good cleaning.

The big thing with the 22RE is the timing chain. Guys like to wait until way past the service interval to change it because it's a PITA, and then the plastic guides break and it wears a hole in the water jacket and radiator fluid go poof.

So if it's got what sounds like valve chatter coming from the very front of the block, plan on pulling the head and replacing the timing chain. Other than that, they're great little motors, gutless and nearly bulletproof.

Gotta pull off the head to do a timing chain huh? That sounds like it sux....I'd also expect to have to do all gaskets at that time and probably crank/cam seals too? Regular shade tree mechanic type work or anything complicated or special tools? I'm sure there is a tutorial on this on the forum, right?...I'll look,... Thanks for the repsonse.

You won't need anything more exotic than a torque wrench. I think there's a way to yank the timing cover without pulling the head if you really don't want to, but I figure as long as you're in there you might as well do it right.
