getting ready for the trail

i have a stock 98 4runner 4wd with 31" tires, skid plates, and running boards. what should i do to get it ready for some mild trails? lift first? tires first?

and as far as the lift goes... i've been considering two options but dont really know the benefits of each. one is the daystar spacers in the front and coils in the back. the other would be spacers all around.

would i even need a lift in the back for mild wheeling?

im hoping to get the thing ready with $1,000 or less, so nothing too ridiculous.:)

I have a stock height 2000 4Runner with 32" tires and a limited slip diff. and have no problems on mild trails. I've even done some tougher trails with no problems. The first thing I did was remove the running boards, because they're the first thing that gets thrashed when offroading. Plus, just by removing them makes your vehicle appear lifted. Offroad tires came next, there's no substitute for traction, and then the LSD. I can't suggest which lift that would benefit you because I haven't installed one yet, nor have I felt that I needed one yet.

have you had any rubbing with the flex at all?

There is minimal rub at full stuff if the wheels are turned, but the rubbing is on the mud flaps I installed after I removed the running boards.

If you're thinking new tires, going from 31's to 32's is pointless and a waste of $$.

With a couple of inches of suspension lift and a 2" body lift you should be able to fit 33's, with minimal rubbing.

Add some quick disconnects for the sway bar(s) to get some added articulation offroad.

If you're really into it maybe a locker for the rear diff, don't waste your $$ on an LSD.
