I got this 1989 T4R on trade for a old honda out board motor from the barter section of Craigslist. I know nothing about 4runners but I am looking forward to getting this thing up and running and off road on some hunting trips. The guy who traded it to me said he had rebuilt the motor and just needed some minor work (belts and hoses, etc) to get her back on the road. I paid $250 for the bat motor 4 years ago and never used it so I think I got a good deal even with a non working T4R. What am I in for? Where should I start? What do I even have in my drive way? Please help me out as I am also new to Forums.

I have no plans on parting this rig out. I love seeing classic 4wheelers on the road.

Is the 3.0L really that bad?

No the 3.0 isnt really that bad IMO..its just if you're going to yank the old motor out, might as well put a better motor in, since it takes little to no modification. From my understanding the 3.4 is just a re-vamped 3.0

I agree. I would much rather see it restored than parted out. Especially since the body looks pretty straight in an uncommon color. :ranger:

Or you can go a different route and go for a 2.7l 3rz engine. They got decent power and get great gas mileage, its what I'm planning for my swap eventually.

If I were in your shoes, i'd go the 3.4(5vz) route. It's as bolt in a swap for you as you can get besides the original 3.0 (3vz). The benefits would be more power, better fuel economy, and reliability.


That said, I'm researching the 1uz(Along with the 5vz,3rz,and 2rz)

It looks like you have a ton of work. Timing belt is off may or may not be in time anymore. I don't know how easy it is to do a 3.4l swap but everyone says its really easy. I wouldn't go for the 22re just because you would either have to regear the reared or it would be very gutless I do love how reliable it is just not the power. Good luck keep us updated! Should be a fun one when your done.

I am the biggest supporter of the 3.0 on the planet. It's a good engine, but if it is dead, put a 3.4 in. It just makes sense. It will cost the same as rebuilt 3.0 and it bolts right in. The only difficult part is a little wiring.

I will try and keep my 3.0 forever, but if/when it dies, 3.4 time!

Everyone is jumping the gun right here. Do you have a price range? Because most of the turbo diesel swaps aren't cheap swaps. Give us a price range before we start dreaming of all the swaps we can do.

I am just going to get this 3.0 working since I have everything for it. I would love to put a turbo diesel in it eventually but not until this motor dies on me. Going to work on it for first time tomorrow and get a better grasp of what I am dealing with.

Any update on what you have going? I wish you Luck! I'm really a 3.0 supporter just thought it might be easier to swap but glad to hear your sticking with the 3.0! keep us updated when you can!!
