New Owner of 5th Gen TEP, Time to Lift! Advice Wanted

Hey all,

Firstly,

I'd like to let everyone know that I have been looking at the 5th gen lift thread for awhile, as well as searching through the forums in regards to ICON Lifts, King Lifts, Boss Lifts, etc. I learned a lot and glad to have looked at previous posts. I just need a bit more of a personalized response to the questions I have. I've got my sights set on ICON.

Recently sold my 3rd Gen 4Runner and picked up a 2015 Trail Premium model. Loving it so far, but will love it much more after a lift and new tires/wheels. I am seriously considering the ICON route, but doing it in my own stages. The last Runner I had was lifted with Bilsteins front shocks, Eibach coils, OME nitrocharger rear shocks, and OME 890 coils, camburg ?UCA's, etc. I am looking for a much more capable lift setup this time around, and don't want to put that sort of setup on my new rig. I want the ability to rebuild the shocks, push the truck a little harder, and get more comfort on road/off-road.

Basically, this is what I would like to start out with:

Icon 52800 Overland Series 3" Lift Rear Coil
Icon 2.5" Remote Reservoir Rear Shock set
Icon 58747 Extended Travel Remote Reservoir Coilover set
Camburg Upper Control Arms

What do you guys think about this for a starting point? I wanted to get some experienced opinions from the members who could really offer expert advise.

My plan is to get the best shocks/components possible and just build the rest of the rig up as I go, but I want to really future proof the thing, since I plan to have it a long time. So I would like to start out with a good baseline and go from there.

Thank you

Have you looked at the OME BP-51 setup with a set of UCA's, of course?

Ultimately though if you do it once before outfitting your rig the ride is either going to be real rough with it unloaded (hope you don't like your kidneys) or you're gonna have to swap new coils in as you get the rig loaded out.

Might be better to do all the heavy stuff first (armor and bumpers and roof rack if that's what you desire) and see what your needs are... as you go you can keep track of the weight added (front and rear) and order the correct setup rather than guessing up front. Just a thought.

Thanks for the response. Are you saying that the setup I have in mind with ride rough as a whole, or the Rear coil choice will make it ride rough when unloaded? I have looked into the OME BP-51, but I don't want to take the plunge into it. I haven't seen or heard anything from anyone that is currently running it. Look like a cool setup, but I don't like the idea of dumping close to $3,000 into something and being the "initial tester." I like ICON because its been around, has great customer service, and shows to be very reliable.

I don't plan to outfit the rig with a lot of armor, at least not right away. The first bit of protection I have planned is rock sliders.

^what Nate said. No matter what you do you will only improve on road performance and comfort OR off road ability... not both. The stock setup is the ultimate compromise for both worlds. Weight is key to shocks and Springs so it would be better to get the weight so you know what you need. Drive around with several hundred pounds in it for a few months. Most guys all kitted out are adding 500 to over 1000 lbs to their 4Runner. What feels good at 4600 lb does not work too well at 6000 lbs as a daily driver.

I don't have the BP-51 setup but those I've read that do have it on 4Runners and LC200's love it. It'd be on my short list for sure if I was looking for a high end lift.

wait, so you're willing to spend 2650 on icons but not 2800 on ome bp-51's? I think you should compare what both offer before jumping to a conclusion over $150 price difference. OME's are probably more world renowned for quality and reliabilty than Icons. Not hating' just saying'... OME is good stuff. A ton of R&D time (i think 5 years) went into the BP-51 setup.

I have nothing against OME, I had multiple OME parts on my last 4Runner and it was flawless. I don't doubt the quality or the research they've done. I just haven't seen a lot in terms of the reviews for that setup. I've read a couple threads on here from people asking about them, but it doesn't seem like anyone on this forum has them yet. I'd love to hear about first hand experience with this product, they look awesome and the literature on the setup makes it sound top-tier.

The price difference of a few hundred bucks doesn't have any effect on my choice, at all. I agree with you, difference isn't enough to discount their offering as an option.

I guess it comes down to me leaning towards ICON and I just want some advice from people who have had it or have tips on my specific case. If setting my truck up with the setup I'm looking into sounds dumb or too incomplete for starting out, I just want to know.

Thanks man

Jetblack3's, that rig looks so awesome! How are you liking that setup so far? Does it drive good around town and unloaded with that setup? I really like what you've done with it.

I love it man make me want to hit every bump, ride smooth and the ko2s are quite

So the 2" coils then? I really want to have 3" of lift front and rear though. What does "t.a.p for the order" mean?

Thanks for the advice

My .02...
I know you want the lift. I know you can't wait to get it and admire it and all that. But...
If you are going to put high quality components on there with stock weight and eventually are going to add weight, you are going to either A) Pick the wrong springs and the vehicle will ride like a covered wagon or B) Pick the right coils for current weight and have to replace crap when you eventually add your other components.

You are wanting to add a quality suspension so I assume you will be taking it off road correct? I mean if you just wanted the lift for normal operation the 5100's would be fine and cheap. So if you are building for off road you will need skids, bumpers, rack, sliders, drawers, fridge, awning, roof top tent and all that stuff will change what works as far as suspension.
Start adding all the stuff first and leave the suspension stock. When you get to a point it does not work good anymore then add your ICON stuff that will then be correct for the weight.

TAP. Total Automotive Products. They are a vendor.

Suspension last?

I am in the same boat. My trail/kdss is stock other than the 275-KO2's that I added. Research brought be down to either the ICON setup you are looking at...similar to a Stage 2 (I think) and the King OEM coil over front (KING-25001-278-A) with King rears (25001-279). I hadn't considered that the ride would be too stiff until I add 500-1k lbs. of weight. I may never add that much. I will probably do a Southern Style front bumper with winch, sliders and maybe a roof rack. I am trying to do a comprise setup for day trip offroad, but keep the mileage > 15mpg. Not sure if that is a good idea, but that is where my head is at now.

I just added the SS front bumper yesterday. The bumper with the winch is only about 150 lbs and brought down the lift by .25". Not too terrible. Gas mileage with a gobi, 285's, bumper and lift is about 16.5

That is really good to hear. I ordered the Southern Style front bumper today. Looking 4-6 weeks out. I think I will go with the Warn Zeon 10s, but still researching. Thanks for the info!
