Got a quote from Toyota on crucial 90k service. Seems like a massive ripoff.

So I went by our local Toyota dealership (we only have one in town) to get a quote on a few items for our 06 4Runner, which just hit 90k miles.

1. Timing belt
2. Water pump
3. Serpentine belt
4. Transmission flush ($358.00)

Total: $1,436.14, plus taxes.

Seems way too high considering I still have to do

1. Coolant flush
2. Powering Steering flush
3. Front/Rear differentials & transfer case drain/refill.



So went to my local mechanic (whose been competent enough to work on my m3, G8, and ISF) and he advised me to get the transmission flush from the dealership, but he said if I get all the parts oil etc.. for labor he'll charge me $350.00 for

1. Timing belt
2. Serpentine belt
3. Water pump
4. Coolant flush
5. Power steering flush
6. Differential drain/refill (front, rear, and transfer case).

Seemed like a good deal to me considering dealership wanted $1046.00 plus taxes just for the first three items.

Well, the Timing Belt/Water Pump should include a coolant flush by default since you end up draining the block to replace the water pump and belt most of the time (well if you're doing it the right way at least.)

You need to look at the parts break-down as there should be 2 gallons of Toyota SLLC charged out for the timing belt or water pump job. Labor is typically slightly higher at the Dealership side than 3rd party shops (though the quality disparity does not favor either to be honest.)

Parts prices can range quite a bit depending on how you source genuine Toyota parts and/or what level of quality vs. cost you're looking for in aftermarket components. It's up to you how you want to go about it, sounds like the mechanic you have knows what he's doing so I don't see why you wouldn't just stick with him and/or his advice since he'd probably end up charging you close to the dealership if he had to source parts himself and mark them up.
