Got hit in my DS rear wheel, need rear end advice

Hey guys,

Ill have a picture up tomorrow, but long story short at about 30mph I went through an intersection and some woman cut in front of me, we swerved, and she hit me at about 45* angle in my driver side rear wheel.

Wheel is angled 45* out (more wheel outside of the fender flares towards the front of the truck, rear end portion tucked back inside wheel well). After police arrived I did move the truck onto the shoulder.

When I drove the truck that short 10' distance, aside from tire rubbing, I didn't notice anything else too noisy out back.

I will plan on buying the truck back from the insurance, its a 98 5 speed with only 140k and no rust. Is there any sort of upgrade I could get for the rear end at all? I know some trucks had e-locking rear ends, but thats more than I will care for doing at this time.

Anyways, I'm hoping the frame or anything isn't twisted up and that likely a easy rear end swap will have me up on the road again after I get another wheel and tire...UGH what a hassle, and I just changed my rear diff fluid too! haha

There are many thing you could do to upgrade your rear axle. I'll list a few.

• Upgraded Axles?
• Rear Disc Brake Convert?
• E-Locker (You would have to change your front diff gears, but well worth it.)
• Rear Gear?
• Axle Trussing?

Those are the large item ones but that's what I would be looking if I was in your shoes.

I suppose since I do maybe a dozen off road excursions a year I don't really need anything heavy duty unless it was one of those things you just do while you're in there type thing.

Ill have to wait for adjusters to see it before I get it back to somewhere to work on it, but In the mean time I'm pricing out rear end's locally that are complete. I really only bought the truck to pull my drag car around and still have fun with the 5sp offroad, so I'm trying to be good about keeping it "stock" lol

Its my understanding since I did the tundra brakes rear discs wouldn't be too necessary, and drums are OK for me. I dont think I will need upgraded axles or anything that serious.

Im hoping they total, I can buy back, minus my deductable (500 or 1000 I dont remember yet) and have a couple grand to fix the rear and maybe upgrade my suspension.

just getting curious and looking for donor parts locally to get the ball rolling,

If the rear transaxle and all needs to be changed out from getting tweaked in the accident, which 4runners can I pull the most direct swap out of?

Mine is a 98 5sp no locker. Im not sure of gears in the rear, or if there would be/are different ones out there.

Reason I ask is because I found a real clean 93 parts car with everything behind the rear doors intact almost, and its 4wd.
