Not a Toyota owner (yet)... looking for my 1st 4x4 to get me to some backpacking trails that are off limits to my passenger car, and wondering if a 4Runner is in my future! :) Hope to hang out here, learn more about the 4Runner and perhaps get some advice on a purchase.

Thanks!

Welcome

You came to the right place, check out a few threads about each generation of runners. What's your budget? What gen are you looking to get? Portland has a pretty good following on this site so so spend some time check some things out educate yourself on the different benefits of each year. I have a 3rd gen years 96-2002, no matter what year you go for you are going to be in a great truck depending on the condition of said vehicle. I for one choose to have Toyota check out my 99 before I bought it. For 100 bucks they do stupid crap like check lights and horn etc... But I paid 60 more and had them do a compression check. Anything newer then 2010 I wouldn't worry about that but to be safe I recommend you do it if your getting an older one. For the most part the 22RE that came in the 1st and 2nd gen were great along with the 3.4 that's in my current rig, both engines are solid.

BTW where cant you get too?

Thanks! I made a thread in the 3rd gen forum about what I'm considering. Budget is about $5K. Looking at 3rd gen, 91-94 XJs, and also 91-2000 Explorers, as well as Isuzu Troopers. Hopefully I can find a nice 4Runner! Trails I want to access are in the Mt Adams wilderness, or in the Alvord Desert/Steens area, which are basically dirt roads that I don't want to drive my DD (Focus ST) on
