Grey interior 4runners

I want to do the center console swap on my 98, but I'm having a tough time finding the correct grey console.

Toyota used several grey colors (like 50 shades of it XD) ranging from blue-ish to a very dark grey. But mine seems especially uncommon (code YA16). The window sticker refers to it simply as 'grey'.

Does anyone know the production years of the different grey colors? I'm starting to thing that some color variations weren't produced long enough to ever have a cupholder version.

Also if there is no console for my color, why can't I reuse my current center console and swap out the black bezel that makes up the cupholder?

I’m fairly sure Moon Mist is the bluish gray found on 1996-2000, and the lighter gray is only on 2001-2002. You’d want the 99-00 Moon Mist, since the cup holder version is a mid gen upgrade offered in 99 and newer 3rd gens. I bought some sun visors recently off a guy who says he has a center console from a 2000 with gray interior. PM me and I’ll send you his contact info if you’re interested.

I’m not sure what exactly all the differences are for the black piece with the actual cup holders is, but the main difference is the parking brake handle placement. On 96-98 the parking brake handle is in the center, but for 99-02 the parking brake handle is offset to the passenger side in order to give room for the cup holders and cups. You might be able to change the cup holder piece and the parking brake handle, but I’m not sure if the cup holder section clips/retainers are in the same spot.

1996-2000 moon mist (blue grey) interior color code is XX16, 2001-2002 charcoal grey interior color code is XX11. (on door VIN sticker).

So you want a 1999-2000 moon mist console, there were standard and rear heater option consoles. Make sure you get the e-brake handle, cup (part below e-brake handle on tunnel), and floor mounting bracket for the console. Makes the swap much easier.

??Color/Moon mist

So the first two characters in the interior code have nothing to do with the color what do they designate?

I initially thought YA might be the seat option, but this 4runner has the same seats as mine with the code FV16.

Does the post 98 center console have any height dimension differences from earlier ones? It doesn't make sense why people who do this mod would opt to change the center console if all they needed was the bezel and parking brake bracket.

Like mentioned above, the hand brake handle is more centered in the older ones, so even if the cup holder insert fit, the hand brake handle would interfere with it functionality wise. The height of the 99+ console is slightly taller. It also has a hidden tray connected to the underside of the lid, which adds some change storage slots and room for smaller items.

It's my understanding the two letters indicate the interior trim package code,
(which would include seat type) and the 16 indicates blue/grey moon mist.
So no doubt different interior trim codes may indeed have the same type of seats.

A mentioned above the later console is taller, coin tray under the lid, cup holders on front, etc.
The later console does not have the rear window switch on it either, some people relocate that
switch to dash, which is pretty nice.

These videos sum the swap up. (Tim and Sean have covered this mod)
