I used to run Bilstein 5100 ( aka long travel by toytec ) and toytec superflex rear coils the 3.75" of lift without any weight. I was always skeptical about how much of the shock piston would be exposed when the truck would just simply sit normally. It seems very little, as in the shock would bottom out easily, never happened though. Although i never experienced any issues, and never blew the shocks out. Fully stuffed the wheel into the fender on full flex easily.
I recently ditched the bilstein 5100 for the icon 2.5 cdc shocks all around. One thing i dont understand as to why icon offers front coilovers 0-3" and the back shocks only 0-2". So i am still keeping my toytex superflex coils. I went ahead and called Toytec and asked them what the collapsed and extended measurements are of their toytec boss resi rear shock that they recommend for the 3rd gen toytec superflex coils. They are, 24" extended and 16.5" collapsed. I even called more then few times, pretending to be someone else to make sure that they were giving the correct measurement and not something of the top of their heads. LOL!
So i had icon make me rear shocks exactly like the toytec boss resi shock. I installed the shocks few days ago, and even though i have the rear shocks on the softest setting, there is only roughly 4"-5" of exposed shock piston showing. And i dont know if i should be worried, or if i made a mistake ? I mean i used toytec measurements. I have not had a chance to drive the truck because i need to get a wheel alignment. And my mechanic needs at least couple hours to do this alignment, because their machine can measure ride height and i want it both sides even but with rake!
The old bilstein 5100 had about the same amount of shock piston showing. I measured the 5100 and they were basically the same measurement, give or take.
I never heard guys who ordered icon shocks to say anything about ordering a custom rear shock.
So do you think its normal? how much shock piston is showing on your truck?
