VLT (vehicle licensing tax) is simply a personal property tax of sorts though depending on the state that you are in. I remember hearing about it in Virginia when I lived there during college (but kept my New York residence and registration).

When we first moved to Arizona we were surprised by how much it cost to register our 2004 Silverado (in 2009). Amusingly even with tax it was only a little more than base registration in New York though :).

Your first year of VLT payment is always kind of buffered here since it typically gets rolled into your car loan. When that second year bill comes though, it's like a punch in the gut. I've also had a bad tendency to double up on new vehicles around the same model year (got two 2020s after having two 2016s and two 2012s). Having two $700+ VLT payments a year indeed sucks.

At least our income taxes and property taxes are relatively low here though unlike some states with VLT.
 
I haven’t seen it mentioned elsewhere but I keep looking at the rear quarter teaser for the LC. Is that a soft top? The GX550s pillar doesn’t break like that.

That’s basically the current 5th Gen 4Runner with Land Cruiser badging and a higher starting price. Makes me wonder what the next 4Runner is going to be. It’s got to be smaller than this I would think. Are they bringing back the FJ and calling it the “new” 4Runner?

I bet you that it will be same as this LC250 with minor cosmetic changes...the changes are underneath with part-time 4wd, thinner sheetmetal, and cheaper more plasticky interior. I would imagine that it will have 6000 tow rating too and probably similar axle, frame, size, etc..
 
The new LC is probably the only Toyota that interests me and ONLY if it has better offroading chops than the current 4R and stronger rear lockers/diff. My wife likes the GX550 for obvious reasons- bigger, comfier, fancier. The first year may be a rush to buy these and if that happens, dealers will play that 5K-over-MSRP game. I'll wait a year. I have other friends waiting to see the new LC and they have never been Toyota guys.
