H11 bulb the same as an H16?

I purchased LED fog lights. I didn't have my manual with me and the online selector said that I needed H11's. Obviously, when I went to install them I found that the 2014 actually has H16's. I contacted the company and they are telling me that the H11's are the same as the H16's from previous. The actual response I got is below. I am calling BS, thoughts? Is this true?

"The Toyota H16 they are now using isn’t related to the older H16 style that is out there. H11 should be the correct bulb for your application."

The bulb for the Toyota fogs are the Osram H16's. They are not the same as the H11's.
Yes, if you look at images for Osram H16's you will see a totally different bulb.
Go to the dealership and tell them you need a fog light bulb and low and behold, it will look just like your original.
It will look like this:

The H11 bulbs have the same tabs and will fit in the fog sockets, but will be much brighter and may be unsafe for oncoming drivers due to glare. If I recall the lumens for the H11 are 1350. 12V 55 watts People have installed them, so you must make that decision. I have no clue if the wiring will handle the load though.

The lumens for the Osram H16's are in the low to mid 700's. 12V 19 watts.

Actually there was a thread related to this some time ago when an led fog was being released. i believe they were saying that a h11 led would work fine for the h16 and would put out more light. So really it's a big upgrade as not only are you going to led but you get a major boost in light output. Might want to reaim them, and keep in mind it is a higher output. But you are just increasing to what we have in the 2010-2013 so it shouldn't be blinding to other drivers I would guess. Probably not BS.

Search "5th gen led fog bulb" should be first thread that comes up for more info.

Thanks! I did get the H11's in and they are LED. They are VERY BRIGHT!! The bulb seems to be tipped up a little bit when you look into the lens of it but it is in there correct. I looked through the manual, how do you re aim them?

Stolen from a post from [MENTION=113208]toknee[/MENTION] as he retrofit led assembly and I don't know how to link to it, just gotta search :) Maybe PM him if this doesn't make sense. I have a 2011 so I have no idea, but honestly if it looks ok against a garage door you may not need to do anything:

You can adjust the drivers side light just by reaching up with a screwdriver.

The passenger side is easier done, if you remove the 2 bottom bolts securing the passenger wheel liner, peel the liner back a little, then a screwdriver and your forearm will be able to reach the adjusting screw.

When I installed my LED fogs, projected illumination was at level with the headlight level of illumination. That's a bit high, the illumination for the fogs should be below the headlight. With the level below the headlight, you get better illumination of the area, where the headlight illumination kinda crates a dead spot.

It's easier to adjust the fogs, if the headlights are off. I was able to do this by removing the fuse from the positive feed of the harness (assuming you are using the harness from TRS).

I got them from Xenondepot.com. I did put them in but was having some problems with my fog lights that I am having the dealer look at first before I do the install. They are just plug and play. I did test them and they are BRIGHT!
 
Newer Toyotas are coming with an H16 bulb that is not related to the traditional H16 bulb out there, adding to some confusion. We have found based on customer feedback that H11 will work on these vehicles. If you order the 5202/H16 style, they will NOT be compatible.

John is correct. They did fit. However they are not totally straight into the housing as they tilt up a little. You can see this just by looking at them as the bulbs are not exactly straight up and down like the H16's that I took out.
 
sorry to resurrect an old thread but due to all the reading i did on this site that seemed to confirm without confirming that h11 bulbs indeed do replace h16 is not a true statement.

I ordered a set of h11 optilux bulbs from amazon (i've had good luck with that brand in the past) and easily removed my h16 fogs. however, i could not install the h11 replacements. the tabs, though looking very similar to the naked eye, are different. They were also metal, so modifying them is not something i want to risk doing and possibly damaging the bulb.

as a test, i tried placing them in the headlight housing (oem h11) and they fit fine. I then tried using a factory h11 headlight bulb in the fog light housing and had the same issue.

So as an fyi, h11 do not replace h16 bulbs as a general rule. there may be some brands that are interchangeable but i wouldn't bet on it.

Shouldnt be apologizing, good info, i wonder why some fit and others dont. Sounds like you need the full led retrofit!
 
Great. Now I'm in a situation. I purchased some H11 Philips Crystal clear
Vision ultras for my headlights and H11 yellow Nokya Foglight bulbs with yellow Foglight tint overlays.

Headlights will fit? What about the fog lights?

With conflicting results the only way to know with that brand will be to try it, otherwise you are probably stuck with above options. The TRS led option is pricy but looks like a good one, likely the last bulbs you'd buy.
 
The H9 conversion is totally unrelated to this thread but that is good info. These guys are talking about h16 to h11 in the fogs of the 14-15 trucks.
 
People running H11's in their fogs, are you concerned with the extra wattage and higher temps? I temporarily installed an H11 in my fog and checked the temperatures with a temp gun. The H11's were running several HUNDRED degrees hotter than the H16 bulbs. The H11's were reading around 450-500* F where the H16 is around 200-250* F. I guess this can be expected by more than doubling the wattage. My concern is if the housing and wiring are meant to handle those kind of tips. I didn't want to risk melting the housing or wiring so I removed them and reinstalled the H11's.
