Hankook Dynapro ATM RF10 vs. Toyo Open Country...pics and info appreciated!

Time to replace the tires on the 4runner. I'm looking at these two choices. Does anybody have any info or pics of these two particular tires? I'll be doing some light offroading and live in the Prairies in Canada where we get some wild winters.

Also, just to confirm, the biggest tire I can fit on a 2007 Limited with the Limited 18" wheels is 265/65/18, correct?

there's a few threads with reviews/opinions on both in the forum, u will find em if u search & if ur not lifted, most tires to 32 using stock wheels will fit without trimming, they also fit the spare location.

Check my lift/tire writeup in my sig for my thoughts on the ATM's. I love mine, they've done great thus far (about 20k on them). I've only had them in mild snow (2-3 inches) but they were excellent. I've got two complaints. First, they have gotten louder with age. They aren't "loud", but if I have the radio down I can hear them (don't let this scare you, it's not major, but just something I noticed). Second, the tread width is significantly narrower than tire width (idk if this is them in general or just in my size).

can we open this back up for discussion? ark i remember seeing you having some negative things to say about your kooks after more mileage, correct?

i talked to my tire guy about a month ago to get some terra grapplers lined up in 265/70R18 and he quoted me $730... until i called today and he misquoted and its really about $880 O.T.D.

i've been buying tires from him for years but went to belle tire out of curiosity and they offered me a set of 275/65R18 toyo open countrys for $150 a piece. im all of a sudden in a frenzy again because i'm finally installing my 3/2 next week.

so,

half inch shorter toyo's (48 lbs) for about $660ish?
265 (size i really want, and 42 lbs) hankooks for about $760ish?
or the extra $120 on terra grapplers in 265 (46 lbs)?

any and all suggestions welcome!

edit: should also add that the toyo's have no treadwear warranty.

You're right, I absolutely hated them after about 20k. Noise got pretty bad (worse than my duratracs by far) and you could forget riding in the rain. Wet pavement felt like driving on a foot of snow. I ditched them after 25K miles and never looked back.

I have the ATM's on now and I really like them. I've had them on since November and have driven through pretty deep snow, over ice, and through rain. I've had no issues at all. They've handled very well and I'm actually kind of sad to see them go. I got a great deal on new wheels and tires so I'll be replacing them this week.
I've never had regrets with them and I'd buy them again as well as recommend them. '

I'll just toss out another often overlooked option. Cooper Discoverer AT3s.

Just picked up a set and took them over Guanella Pass and onto some rocky/gravelly backroads this weekend. They did great.

I will have to second ARK. I experienced the same issues with my ATMs around 20k as well and I ended up selling mine too. I will add that my biggest complaint was that they were way too loud for such a mild AT.

I think we're definitely in the minority, it seems everyone rants/raves over these tires. As you can tell from my initial post, I was very satisfied for the first 15-20k miles. I think a lot of folks are posting an initial review and never following up, because I can't see how other's are having much better luck with them. In a full time 4wd I was slipping/sliding in the rain like crazy, to the point I felt unsafe to drive with even the slightest bit of moisture. I keep thinking the traction could have been somewhat related to size (255/75/17), but the noise was unacceptable in my opinion.

Maybe it's a good thing I haven't gotten that far with them to experience this myself. Makes me wonder why they seem so good initially and then deteriorate so quickly.
Maybe there was a reason I'll be falling into new shoes before this fall/winter season hit.

EXACTLY. All the reviews on discounttire.com etc are within the first 10k miles or so. I want to know what they'll be like at 30k! Thanks for all the responses. Going to haggle my guy some more and see if I can't score something else.
