Help diagnosing sound.

I get this obnoxious noise coming from my engine when I go fast through big puddles sometimes or when I rinse my engine off. All the belts are good (replaced) and tight. Can't figure it out the two belts that you can see in the video dont appear to be slipping. Anyone know?

Thinking it could be a pulley on the way out. But whenever I go to diagnose it and find the cause I cant get it to make the sound

If it's only after you wash the engine off or go through a puddle, the water is probably causing one of the belts to slip a little on the pulleys it's running on. If it was doing it all the time, then you you'd probably have an issue like a bad pulley bearing or maybe just a loose belt.

However, I don't think this is par for the course for anyone who has washed off their engine or driven through a deep puddle. I'd recheck your belts for proper tightness. When you pull or push on the belt midway between two pulleys, you should have around a 1/2" of deflection. Less than a 1/2", you might be a little too tight, more than a 1/2" you might be a little too loose.

I may try removing the smallest pulley. Which if I remember correctly requires me to remove ALL the pulleys. And then washing off the engine and seeing if it continues to make the sound.
If it does I can only assume its the timing belt pulley. Or something completely different.

I just put all new belts on my 4R last weekend. I read on here somewhere that the PS pump belt and AC belt both should have about 1/4" of deflection. The Alt belt should have about 1/2" deflection.

This is how I setup my belts so hopefully that is correct. I no longer have the minor belt squeal on cold/damp mornings.

My skid plates are off too, when I find some water that splashes up on the pulleys the'll make a racket like that. I just spray some lube on them and all is well. I can't tell the volume of the noise, but hopefully that's all yours is too.

So, do you lube your belts every time you change the oil? Lol


Pretty sure youre not supposed to do that, its gotta be clean down there, and its not a lube item.

Ahahahaha, no. No lube on the belts. Just the pulleys. Sorry for the confusion, it's been a long day.
