Help! Did a motor swap and now have issues

Please don't flog me if this has been covered before. I don't need any more frustrations on this thing.

I blew my motor in my 2001 and bought a 1998 to pull a clean and good motor out of for my rig. I told the mechanics that the base motor is the same and that they would need to change over the "outer stuff". Well, I got my runner back and it has been super smooth and great till I drove highway speed.

The abs, trac and engine lights came on throwing all kinds of codes. My rig had no issues at all before the blown motor but now Is full of issues. Some of the codes are:

CO200
CO205
CO278
C1201
C1223
C1224
C1246
C1253
C1340
PO171

I'm not sure what to do or where to start. Upon inspecting I know they didn't change the coils and wires. Could that be throwing some of these? I took it back to the mechanics and they said its my ABS CONTROL, basically i need an new master cylinder and all that stuff now and that it is not from the swap but from a coincidence that it went out. Initially, I figured some messed up vacuum hoses but now not so sure.... HELP

I know when people do this a lot swap everything from the intake manifold up. Not sure if they did that for you or not.

No choice. 2001 is throttle-by-wire so all that had to stay original or it wouldn't run.

My internet guess is a major electrical fail caused by a bad ground or connector issue. All those sensors didn't fail at the same time and I don't think a vacuum hose could cause that DTC jackpot. I've attached the VSC circuit diagram. To start, I'd look at the Service Hints on the next to last page, and check voltage and continuity to ground as listed. If you're lucky, one of those will point to the problem. If you don't know how to do that, post back and I'll help you through it. You'll need a digital VOM. Also check all the connectors to the VSC ECU and the VSC actuator.

Diagram is from 2002, should be identical.

The P0171 you should attack on its own. Start by cleaning MAF.

Thank you guys for your advice. I know the coils and the plug wires are not from mine. The intake looks like mine, I'll confirm that later tomorrow. Is the throttle bodies and fuel delivery the same?

No, throttle body is completely different. Butterfly is motor controlled. The accelerator cable is just a limp-home backup. Fuel part should be the same, except the injectors are probably different. Not sure how much difference that makes.

Ive DOne a tons of 3.4L Swaps from the three cable throttle body to the SIngle cable self adjusting IPS. It's not that much complicated to swap, this one has no vacuum line like the 98 you got coming from intake to Brake Booster.

If you would like to PM me and give me more details I can help you fairly quickly. its easy to narrow it down.

Injectors are all the same. whatever you do don't tamper with the throttle body this is an electronic control throttle body.


Difference, Exhaust manifolds, Complete air intake to the Air Box and of course original harness.
 
this is not hard to trouble shoot

PM so I can send you my number to call me. Ive done tons of swaps and can help u troubleshoot it. Like 40-50 swaps, just in case youre wondering.

Injectors are NOT all the same, assuming you mean across the board for 3rd gen 4Runners.

I know for a fact that 98 won't plug into a '99, and willing to bet that the 01 won't plug into a 00.
 
I've done plenty of them they all match the harness from 96-02 runners. The design or look might be different from a gray one to a brown one. But the harness works with both, done plenty of them to know they match with harness and won't affect the drive to do what is doing.

Not my experience at all. Just my .01.
 
I talked to the mechanics that did my work today. They said if I give them a list of things they need to change, they will be willing to do it for me. So now I just need to figure out what I need to pull off my old motor to have them put back on my new one
 
Here is an update. I looked at the part number on the harness I have that is not in the rig im driving. It shows to be the 1998 wire harness so, that means that i still have my 2001 harness in my rig. The coils were off in the part numbers but i found that they were interchangeable?

I cleaned the MAF sensor and changed the coils out of my busted engine and it is running better but still throwing the VSC, TRAC OFF and CE light. I'm going to go to autozone at lunch and see if it still has the same codes
 
It's your 02 sensor Dustin. It's related to the VSC,TRAC OFF light. It'll give you a bank 1 bad sensor code if I recall.
 
Another thing I've read into and haven't encountered myself has been bad gas cap.. Supposedly you replace the seal and disconnect battery and it resets it.

its throws a code for a 02 sensor when this light goes on. Dk exactly how they are related changed one out on an 2002 and light went away. If anyone knows please let me know how they are related.

I've Read this and took it from there and it worked:

SOURCE: VSC TRAC, TRAC OFF and CHECk ENGINE lights
You have to know what code is stored to fix the problem. Toyota's will generally display a Check Engine light, VSC and TRAC light all at the same time, even if it's a simple problem with an oxygen sensor (for example). You can disconnect the negative battery cable for a few minutes, even though you should a scan tool should be used, to clear out the code
