Help! heat stopped and so did the engine

I'm new here. I have a '99 sr5. V6 with about 190k on the clock. I was driving for about 5 minutes the temp gauge went up to normal but the heat never got warm. Then it just stopped running and coasted to a stop. It turns over but won't start. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

You are going to need to do a lot of troubleshooting.

lets start with is the radiator full?

Do you have spark?

Fuel?

Timing belt still intact?

I could hypothesize that:

water pump locked up (no heat) and then it took out the timing belt (no run condition)

but its hard to tell with out looking at anything or having a lot more info.

Stick is dead on. My guess, water pump seized up, broke, took timing belt out. Not the end of the world, $650 ish and shell be good again. But trouble shoot it first, maybe you'll get lucky.

Thanks for the information. I checked the radiator and it was full. This all happened last night and it was sitting alongside the freeway. I just had it towed to the shop. I suppose I will find out today what the issue is. If the timng belt do go, is that catastrophic to the engine?

No. It's a non-interference engine. If the timing belt broke all you have to do replace it. Not too big of a deal. Nothing else would break.

I don't have any timing belt problems, but this is soooo cool to know! Loving my 4Runner even more!

Yep, 2nd and third gen v6s are non-interference engines. Of course some of the 1st gens with the 3.slow engine are non-interference. :girl:

You're spot on with the water pump and timing belt. Apparently the timing belt grenaded itself and wiped out the tensioners, pulleys and other belts. Top it off with a new battery and it's about $1360 for parts and labor. Thanks for the quick responses.

That's a lot my man. Most dealers will do this for about $800 ish, a good Toyota Indy Shop about $650. I'd price it out a bit more before you give the green light on that. Timing belt, water pump, tension, belts, cam and crank seals are about $300 in parts for OEM stuff. About a 5 ish hour job.

Or do it yourself at the 300-400 mark. Its time consuming, but very strait forward.
