Help me choose the right gun...

i picked up a SIG P250 9mm and so far i love it. ive only put around 300 rounds through it but very happy with the purchase. i went 9mm for a couple of reasons..big one is ammo is much cheaper. walmart winchester 100rounds for $22 is a steal when you want to practice. this was my first gun purchase and didnt see the need to go all out on my first one. get used to this before stepping up

not one of you said anything about a 357 magnum revolver so sad!!!:wtf: lol. me personally i like to target practice with my kimber .45 compact. man i love that gun. but if i was to get my ccw i would carry my S&w 357 magnum revolver 7 shot. and yes they do make them to carry 7 rounds. they are vary accurate plus you can get them in a 4 inch barrel and easy to conceal. nothing beats a great revolver. sorry im a little old school lol. you can blame my old man for that.

Well, for me, a 357 would be tough to practice with...it would bruise my hands after 100 rounds or so!! It won't be cheap either. And without practice, i am not sure if i would want to use it as CC.

Actually, for my wife, she has a Ruger Sp101 which can take 38 special or 357. I am using 38 special hydrashok. 357 will be too much for her (and me).

i got nothing against revolvers. they definately have their advantages. there are almost NO malfunctions with them (except for a bad primer hit, which is very rare). for me, i just prefer the magazine capacity and ease of reloading that comes with a semi-auto. but, everyone has their preferences. 357 is definately a hot round with a lot of ass behind it.

my friend has a revolver, and it sure is fun to shoot, alot of power behind it. but i do not see myself using that as a carry. definitly like the semi auto, easy reload, and capacity for a carry.
i once dated a girl that had the bright pink 38 revolver, it was tiny. she looked all cute with it in her hands til you saw how accurate she was 50 yards away. good thing we ended on good terms

well i look at it this way. if its your life at stake it dont matter how much more than this gun kicks and that gun and what not. honestly i think a 357 revolver is more accurate than any semi automatic pistol you can buy. plus a 357 packs a good punch and if you use it to defend yourself guaranteed its gonna do its job not like them 9mm pee shooters. and as far as magazines they do make i device that holds rounds for a revolver that allows you to reload just as fast as a magazine. just takes some practice. and most 357 will shoot 38s so if you want to go shooting you practice with your 38 rather your magnums. its cheaper to shoot and you can shoot them all day without hurting your hand.

that makes sense, but for a first gun, i would like something i am currently decently accurate with, til i gain practice and skill, then maybe i will move up on the scale.

check out the springfield XD - I've shot a 9mm and .40 and liked them. I still prefer glocks but see if you can find one to shoot and try out.

i guess it just depends on the person. but i prefer revolvers over semi autos any day of the week. especially a 357. they are vary accurate especially long distance pistol shooting. you wont get that with a semi auto

Yes, Ruger SP101. I have shot both...the Ruger and my Sig P239. No contest b/w the two...i am far more accurate with the Sig...and this is with the Ruger using 38 special Winchester.

I think that the OP is talking about conceal carry...and if so, then long distance accuracy is really not that important. (If you have to shoot long distance, then you have no business pulling out your gun in the first place!)

no its not but it can be. i should have stated its just as accurate long distance as it is short distance, my bad!!! and as far as concealing, you can conceal a revolver just as easy as a semi auto. you can buy a 357 magnum with a 3 inch barrel. in reality that would be smaller than most .40 .45 and especially if they are a sig or glock.

I will give you my thoughts of some of the I have read here:
I will address my thoughts on a weapon and my thought on a gun. Weapons are for killing other people, good guys use it in defense and bad guys for other reasons. Guns are for the other types of shooting.
To me a weapon has a different purpose then gun, that doesn’t mean the same fire arm can’t be used for both purposes.
If it is a weapon and you have to use it as such it will probably me the most stressful events of your life. You will probably be about 10 feet or less form the person. You will not have time for a well placed shoot. You do not want that round to go through the person’s body and then three or 4 more wall and kill somebody else. You want a big slow moving hollow point. Do not listen to people who talk about head shots or well place shoots, or other multiple well placed shoots. Think about what you will hit if you miss or the bullet goes through.
Small shot gun is ideal. A .45 is ideal. You make a comment about needing more practice before you get a .45. If you feel this way you have NO BUSINESS getting a "weapon" of any type. That doesn’t' mean you should not get a fire arm but until you are completely comfortable do not think or use it as a weapon.
Accuracy: A good .45 is more accurate than a crappy .22. A good .22 is more accurate than a crappy .45.
If you are getting a GUN just to have fun shooting think about the cost of ammo.

Another thing to think about, if you have any legal issues with a fire arm you can probably forget about every having a job in law enforcement.

theres a few features that i like about the XD series, but the Glock is the defacto standard for polymer guns

you need to go into "general glocking" then. there are a bunch of forums there. There are forums for all types of guns, you just need to find them click "forums" towards the top. Then it will show all the forums. You are probably just looking at GNG lounge. Did you validate your email that they send?

And yes, like all forums they have a bunch of idiots who do nothing but post there, but, if you want a glock. glocktalk is a great resource for stuff. Don't forget to search! haha

haha i was just using the new posts feature. and of course i used the search option, and i did find some decent threads. but it was not at all what i was expecting from a "glock" forum. i did validate my email as soon as i recieved it. but i ended up joining glock.pro. its small, not many active members. maybe 20 posts per day. but i have already recieved some fantastic info and had my main questions answered.

I wish this had been quoted a few more times already. A 21 y/o male with a concealed carry is a scary thing. I have extensive experience with firearms of all types and I can honestly say that at 21 I would have had no business carrying a firearm as a concealed weapon. I would advise Trevloc to own a pistol for several years and fire thousands of rounds through it before concealed carry. I would recommend keeping it inside your vehicle if concerns for personal safety are so great as to feel the need to be armed. You should also be experienced in shooting in a variety of environments. This includes indoors, outdoors, high temperatures, low temperatures, in the rain, in the dark, and from various shooting positions such as standing, kneeling, and prone. If you do not have most or all of this experience under your belt, then imo you should not carry.

Last but not least, if you carry and pull a weapon, you better have every intention of using it. If you use it as a threat tactic it can, and likely will, turn against you very quickly. There are countless persons out there like me who have spent equal parts training in weapons defense as to weapons use. Concealed carry is an enormous burden and requires extreme responsibility.

i had typed up a whole page worth of explaining everything, but i hate debates and arguments on forums. waste of time explaining myself to people on the internet.

so this is my statement towards all that.

I understand all the "i am only 21" thoughts. and i understand the responsibility that comes with having a firearm. i will be safe. as for the weapon vs gun, i get it. as for why i said i needed more practice with a .45 is because i am not used to the recoil. i have to reset after every shot. with a 9mm i can group well, and fire multiples shots at a time without pausing.

but i appreciate all of your concerns and thoughts. :biggrin2:
