Help me figure out this truck sound (with video) sounds like ... Wtf not good

On the trail yesterday. No obvious issues, this sound just started happening for a moment then went away. Sounds pretty terrible though.

Steering pump?

Weird. Almost like someone had performed a bad valve job on it. Maybe starved of oil for a second or two.

Never heard a power steering pump sound like such in any car or truck.

Any CEL, loss of fluids etc.?

Congrats on getting engaged btw.

Engine never skipped a beat. No power loss, shudder or hesitation. It sounded electronic or maybe transfer case. No cels.

I am like 99% sure it wasn't the engine.

I agree that you're probably not supposed to hear that sound. However, I have never heard a power steering pump make that noise.

To me it doesn't sound quite metallic enough to be valves... My old 4Runner sounded quite different when it needed a valve adjustment, and they were WAY off.

Did it go away when you dropped it into neutral, and then start back up when you put it in drive? (when you began to roll back, whatever caused that, and then move forward again)

I put it in N and rolled back and the sound eased up then I put it in drive and went forward. I wasn't up against a rock or anything.

It was just a spontaneous sound that went away. I'm just curious.

Almost sounds like transfer case.

My truck made a VERY similar sound when I had first gotten it. Turned out to be the upper radiator hose installed backwards and was clipping the fan while off-roading.

Can you expand on this? I'm kind of a know-nothing when it comes to transfer case mechanics.

I went away and hasn't come back. I had no problems getting into 4WD and 4LO out going back to 2WD.

My abs sounds nothing like that... Well at least from inside the cab. It's more of a deeper sound like the sound spring doorstops made that everyone loved pulling back and letting go as a child.

Basically when u exceeded the angle that your U-joint was capable of and attempted to go forward the output shaft spline were grinding inside the front driveshaft flange given that horrible sound

here is the visual if u actually broke it.

Simply my theory and not facts. Diagnoses will uncover the problem, Plus if your driveshaft wasn't on the ground afterwards and u made it home then I would say no worries.

At worst drain the fluid from the t-case and see what it looks like. Dip a magnet inside the old fluid and see what sticks.

I have actually had that happen in my Tacoma before the SAS. Turns out when I flexed hard enough the drive shaft (right where it is lubed from and telescopes at) would contact my fuel tank skid and make a huge racket. We notched the skid to make it stop for the rest of the trip.

there is a chance you are having something else similar happen. Does not have to be your drive shaft. when you flex (in your case front and rear in opposite directions) your frame and body move independently of each other. it is very likely your fan or drive-shaft was contacting something once your frame twisted enough.

Check your fan for contact marks and your drive shaft to confirm.

I had a sort of similar sound with mine at full flex, ended up being the gas tank skid plate coming into contact with the rear drive shaft. I only figured it out by having a gopro set up on the ground as I drove over it and seeing the two come into contact. But your's doesn't sound quite the same.

What trail was that by the way? Sweet truck!

About the drive shaft ... I wasn't really moving (barely at all) when the sound was occurring and it still occurred even after I braked to a stop.

Also my gas skid is already bent from contacting the drive shaft over the years. I don't think they hit much anymore.


I'll inspect the fan and drain the tcase. That video was only about 30% into the second trail and the sound didn't come back, however I couldn't see my rear end so I don't know how much flex was happening. In the past I've been at full flex with no issues.

that does sound like the fan hitting something. likely the shroud.

how are the motor mounts?
