Help possible tranny issues

I'm experiencing a hum it the drive train when I'm in gear and stopped. It doesn't do it while it's in park or reverse. I had the timing belt and water pump done in January when I bought it and I had them check out the whole car to make sure everything is ok. They said everything was all good and they are a reputable shop. It will also kind of "clunk" into gear when I'm at a stop and let off on the brake to accelerate. I'm thinking maybe a torque converter or something. It seems to shift fine while I'm driving and I don't have the pink milkshake issue. Any ideas would be much appreciated. Thanks guys

Maybe driveshaft or ujoints. Lift car on jack stands and listen underneith while care is in gear and tires are moving. Of coarse you want to be very safe when under a lifted vehicle when running and off the ground. Have someone in drivers seat for safety. Listen and find out where the hum and clunk is coming from.

Clunk when u let off the brake is likely fixed by greasing the slip joint on the rear driveshaft. Go ahead and lube all 5 locations on the rear drive shaft, double cardan joint and rear u joint. The slip joint will take 10+ pumps from a grease gun, the other joints will want 3-4 pumps.

Also, have you checked the trans fluid level on the dipstick, do this when engine and transmission are hot and in park with the engine running.

the clunk may be the rear brakes. my pads had a bit of gear oil contamination so would stick to the drums, then delay releasing until the truck was moving.
Did both noises arise concurrently?

Yep that happened to me to. Caused by leaking rear axle seals

Thanks for the responses. I will definitely grease the drive shaft joints tomorrow. As for the rear brakes I just got the rear seals done about 2 months ago and the shop said the dipped my brakes in some sort of wash and said they're ok but I need to replace them anyways.

One thing that doesn't make sense to me is that if its humming at a stop, isn't my drive shaft not spinning when Im stopped? Or am I wrong with this observation. Thats what concerns me with the humming I hear and feel in the brake pedal at a stop.

No the driveshaft doesn't turn when you're stopped. You may have an issue with the transmission or TC. The fact that it doesn't do it while in park or reverse does really point to a tranny/ TC issue. At this point you probably need to take it to the shop and have it looked at more closely.

Not my thread, but I'm starting to become convinced that my rear brakes are an issue, one way or the other. Since doing my 13WL TBU I have had a less-than-desirable pedal feel, and I've always had the "kick" when stopping, and sometimes when releasing the brakes, again.

I don't see the tell-tale spray on the rear tires, nor can I remember seeing it, so I pray it's not the axle seals, because I don't have the time or money to work on those at the moment, trying to move halfway across the country, etc.

I do think tis time to pull the drum covers off and take a look though. Possibly just redo the rear brakes while I'm in there. Would you replace all the springs in there, or no? Never worked on drums before, but I've seen a few writeups.

I bought the truck after the rear axle seals had been replaced by a dealer. Upon pulling the drums I saw remnants of what I assume was gear oil. I think the mechanic didnt do a thorough job cleaning up the oil that leaked out when the seals failed. Prrhaps the pads were contaminated and he cleaned them best he could. I know brake pads are porous. Maybe some oil soaked into the pad and was exposed as it wore down.
I hit the whole thing with brake cleaner, scuffed the pads and liner with red garnet sandpaper (does not have oxides), hit it with brake cleaner again. Checked for leaking a couple of weeks later.
Seems to have resolved the issue. I bought the parts to replace them. It' s a kit with new springs and such. I disassembled it to look it over and clean it up, which worked well so I returned the parts. It wasnt as difficult as I expected. I read the tutorials several times. Real challenge was getting the spring back on.
Also, this gave me a chance to loosen the star nut and adjust my parking brakes. Pump the lever up and down with the button in until it firms up.
