Help with Blown Icon Coilover

My wife drives a 2015 4runner. We purchased it February last year and immediately installed the Icon Stage 1 kit. From what I read, those coilovers have a one year warranty so I'm just past it. The 4runner has never been offroad and is driven by my wife. It has about 8k miles on it. Any chance Icon is going to help me out? Are the coilovers serviceable like the shocks? Where do I go from here? Order another and try again or switch to Toytec, etc? Also, I'm not sure what I'm going to do with the vehicle while anything is in for service unless I eat the installation cost and install all the factory components I have. Thanks for the help.

Blown how? Leaking oil?

Yes, they are fully rebuildable. You can send them back to Icon, or anyone familiar with monotube shocks can rebuild them.

Nice. I'm hoping I can find somewhere local to do it, otherwise I'm thinking I'll see if I can find someone to sell me one coilover to work into a rotation.

And yes, found a nice puddle of clean reddish oil on my garage floor. Went to my wife's work and the bottom side of the coilover and assembly is covered in oil.
 
I had one that was leaking oil so I bought a new one from Icon to replace it with and sent it back to them to get rebuilt and keep as a spare.

I got my parts kit in and I'm taking the rig to a shop tomorrow. I noticed in your link that you grabbed a nitrogen fill needle too. Do I need this for the rebuild? Icon didn't mention it to me. Thanks!

Depends on the shop. Most shocks use a standard shrader valve. Icon and some snow mobile mfg I can't remember use the needle valve - want to say Bombardier, maybe.

I probably need it then. I'm having a hard time finding anyone willing to tackle it. This guy thinks he can but I'm not even confident he has nitrogen. I dropped the ball on that.
 
Found a great local shop to do the rebuild and got it done yesterday. They did say there was a lot of metal bits inside the shock and they wouldn't be surprised if it started leaking again within a year. This gets expensive when paying for uninstall, rebuild, and reinstall. I think if another one blows soon I'll be replacing with the Bilstein 6112s. Incredible to me that I paid as much as I did for the stage 1 kit and they have not/may not last.

That sucks, if that one fails again I would switch to OMEs or Bilsteins as you pointed out. Good luck

I did reach out to them when the shock first started leaking. I was told I had to send it to them for warranty work. That's not really feasible for me as it's my wife's daily driver and no shop will keep it on the rack while I send it back. I have also emailed them regarding the information I received yesterday.

From my understanding it would be the manufacturing process. The tolerances were very tight - metal on metal? Supposedly all of the metal shavings were cleaned out during the rebuild so hopefully nothing happens for another 30k or so.

Where did you take your coilover? How much did they charge?

I know a good guy that lives in Renton but has a shop down in Tacoma. He'll drive your parts to his shop and bring them back up if you drop them at his house.

I'm in Spokane. Took it to Hazzard Fabworx. Cost included removal, rebuild, and install. Cost seemed fair when compared to Icon's rebuild prices and general labor to remove and reinstall.

It's wild to me that your coilover was toast after so few miles and (sorry for stereotyping your wife's driving style) being on a wife's daily driver.

Was the shaft of the coilover pitted? That'll do some serious damage to the seals as it moves during compression and rebound.
