I am thinking of buying a 4Runner. I have a RAV4 with V-6 and AWD which is fairly capable, but I would like more. I was out Sunday checking out some petroglyphs and the RAV made it through, but more clearance and low-range would be nice.

What does "off-road" mean? On Sunday, I drove on trails that were well traveled, but not accessible by 2WD automobile. Well, here's my definition:
Road: a paved or dirt/gravel way that can be traveled by a 2WD automobile without difficulty (barring mud or snow or special conditions).
Off-road: Everything else. Cannot be traveled by a 2WD automobile without great difficulty (if at all). Most of the time this is on trails that have been traveled before (with the exception of sand dunes or arroyos).

New 4Runner

I bought a new T4R Trail Premium with KDSS about a month ago. I am VERY pleased with it. Added RCI aluminum skids and still have the gas tank skid to install (too hot today to work on that).

I have the original tires and may stick with them. The next thing would be a set of sliders that can be used as steps.

Smart to get those skids on (I have an RCI front skid that I still need to install), but one of the best mods you can do is upgrading the stock tires.

I drove some of the road west from the Trackways Monument. I kind of tested the skids. Tires worked fine. I will still consider replacing tires, but I think sliders are next.

Might be taking a trip to Las Cruces in late December with the family. Are there any trails or parks around there for beginners and or family friendly. I will be traveling with my one year old and don't want to do any serious trails with her in the runner. Plus I wont be packing for a full on trail trip (ie. highjack, emergency gas, etc). I am sure there is something for us. I have heard NM is off roading heaven. I am just not familiar with the area.
