Hi guys new to forums need advice to increase mpg.

You guys are lucky.
Hawaii as prices right now $4.47 for regular gas at shell/chevron
Then I do mostly city or short highway cause hawaii is small

I'm excited if I get over 200 on full tank.
Light usually comes on at 200.
I got lucky for some reason couple days ago got up to 230 before light and I was excited.

What gas grade does everyone use? And why is mine so ****ty haha but then again I never thought anything wrong with it just thought it wa normal haha
Then again in hawaii it's like 99% stop go town driving..

Does anyone draft on the fwy?

or try to have something ahead of them cutting the wind. Its pretty entertaining stuff on long interstate drives.

I seem to be getting about 18 to 19 MPG at this point using synthetic oil, rolling 265/75/16 P rated tires and a 1 to 1.5" lift. time to change the plugs and clean the MAF this weekend.

Does anyone run 89 instead of 87 grade fuel and get better mileage?

Muddskipper has gone through 5 tanks so far, and this is what she's getting.

22.31
21.65
24.52
21.25
21.60

Averageing about 14-15 gallons per fill up, and and anywhere between 312-328 miles per fill up. :wow:

Impressive. Doubtless she has good driving habits and a light truck.

Best way to increase gas mileage is to slow down. 70+ I get 17-18. 60-65 I can get ~20. On a long vacation/cross country trips I would notice the difference between interstate speeds and slower 2 lane highways. You basically trade time for money :D

Pretty true. I have an Ultragauge in mine, and it shows instant MPG at 70mph around 18, 18-20mpg between 60 to 65, and can get up to 22-24mpg at 55.

Myabe my "around town" has alot more stop and go then you guys on here, Im getting 13 around the city and thats while driving like a old man.
:sobbing:

Be happy with your 16 guys thats not that bad for a truck this size.
You should be getting double the MPH than what your listing. You prob have a bad fuel filter, clogged injector ports and maybe bad plugs and or wires.

My best advice? Leave this site and don't look back. All it's going to cause is a DROP in your mpg's because you're gonna end up wanting to get a lift, bigger tires, heavy bumpers, etc etc. :bluejump:

I thought mythbusters proved drafting didn't help unless ur bumper was almost touching the other cars rear bumper.

On a side note, I hate when ppl in front of me cut wind :)

They actually proved that you only needed to be within 100ft to see an increase in mpg's.

Im getting just over 200 miles per tank like someone listed above but I have the 2.7

Ive changed everything but the fuel filter so far, it requires removal of the intake manifold to change it on my motor. Its a pretty big job Ive been avoiding it.

Ive done plugs , wires, seafoam all fluid/oil changes and other minor stuff.

Im also installing a k&n filter this weekend but my hopes arent to high for it making a huge differance...

Have you had a compression test or are you throwing any codes? It just might be your fuel filter, you should have it done - it might mean getting double MPG. I have the 3.4L and i'm getting well over 20mpg, my light doesnt come until after 300 miles and according to my Ultra gauge I still had almost 4 gallons left so I could have run til about 390 miles til I ran out.

Nice data set! I'm guessing that's not city mileage!

The last few tanks on mine(wife's) looks like this
MPG:
19.29
18.57
21.36

Average 13-14 gallons per fill & 260 miles. The last tank was mostly highway miles, where 90% of the rest is all city.

I have the fuel filter in hand, but man it looks like such a nightmare.. :nono:

I think your right Ive got to look into again, cause I always thought the 2.7 was slightly better then the 3.4. . .

You don't need to remove the intake manifold to change the fuel filter on the 2.7. It is a little difficult to reach on the side of the engine block, but it can be done. It might help you to go in from the wheel well.

Same boat here. I did the plugs when I first got it, then had it tuned up at my mechanic and had the Motorvac cleaning done. All that's really left are plug wires and fuel filter.

After doing some more searching , I found out it was doable without removing the intake mani.

It took me about 2-3 hours to change the fuel filter and install my K&N.

Wow the fuel filter was a mother, dropped alot of F-BOMBS. Both of my forearms look like I got into a fight with a bunch of wild cats. Was able to reach alittle from the top, rest from the wheel well.

But I got it done, now I just hope it helps ! :lookout:

What did your old filter look like, was it corroded?
I did some drafting(Nascar style) on the way to work today and my gauge said I was getting almost 30mpg while doing so, I was maybe 50 feet behind the other cars - I guess it really works!

Na it didnt realy look to bad, but then again i didnt examine it thoroughly .

Now if this and a k&n doesnt increase my mileage im going to look into a new front o2 sensor , and maybe a new cat ?

Best I ever got was 29.2 coming back from Rifle, Colorado (live in Denver) When I traveled for work I tracked every tank for 40k miles and averaged 24-26mpg. that was all highway travel. Now that I work 1.2 miles from home I get maybe 10mpg. I usually only go 180-200 on a tank. Huge difference in the truck never warming up vs long 65mph highway drives.

This is a 4wd limited with stock size tires and only a drop in K&N

Goes to show how any vehicle can lose mpg's when the engine hasn't reached it's normal operating temperature rendering it fuel and performance inefficient.

I've also come to know how turning the engine off when you still see traces of water coming off the exhaust is not a good thing.....for reasons I can't fully back up!:biggrin2:
