HID's or Silverstar Ultras or ?

I have the DDM HID's right now and I'm not too happy with the light output. It is ok, but too scattered and also one like takes a couple of cycles to turn on. A projector conversion is not going to happen any time soon, so I was seeing what people thought about the Silverstar Ultra's or any other bulb. Not looking to spend over $50 if I can, but I want something with good light.

IMO DDm's suck. I went to Silver Star Ultra's and am completely satisfied.

I have Silverstar Ultra's in right now, and am getting ready to install some DDM's lol.


I like the Silverstar Ultra's a lot. We'll see how the DDM's turn out.....

Yeah I bought Scotty's old DDM just to try them out since he was selling them for half price. They are ok and I like the light color, but not worth the hassle and beam pattern. Quicksilvr I'm looking forward to your review. I'll probably go with the Silverstars, but I this the kid mentioned a while ago the PIAA's.

I have the PIAA extreme white and really like the light output. They were $50 shipped from Amazon.

I would do Silverstar Ultras until you can save up for a full on projector retrofit.

I ran the Ultras for a while. Nothing wrong with them. Definitely better than stock.

Now I have DDM's kit in mine and like them. Better than the Ultras.

Can't remember exactly what I paid for them at NAPA (I want to say around $28 with a slight discount), but they we're definately less expensive then the sylvania's and from reviews I've read on the interwebz, equal output as the sylvania's, but most reported about double the life expectancy. I like them. Definately an upgrade over factory.

With my take on HIDs.. You can't skimp out for the cheap crap. You get what you pay for. I am personally very happy with my RetroSolution HIDs and my buddy has the same kit in his 2001 (or 2000, cant remember). The light output is beyond satisfactory. Only drawback is, you pay the price.. They're $$

I know a lot of people are against them cus of glare and brightness but you get an actual decent kit and you'll be surprised how well these housings can focus the light with limited glare. I'm gonna blind lower cars regardless halogen or HIDs, so theres not really a way around it. Not to mention I sit up higher.. Lol

Oh and almost forgot.. DDMs suck

Only drawback is, you pay the price.. They're $$

Where's your proof? Both of my DDM kits work every time. The only real difference between the high end kits and the lower ones are the bulbs. The Philips HID bulbs are very expensive.

I agree with clemson this is my second set of ddm's and I haven't had a problem out of them not to mention they have a lifetime warranty

I have SilverStar Ultra's in right now and really like the output. I'd say the only downside is the short life of them.

I've never ran them myself but I installed a kit in one of my ex's mustangs a while back and they went out in almost a month. I had to warranty them and get another set. I dunno if she still has them cus well she's an ex now lol. A buddy of mine ran them in a '09 Silverado before he got rid of it.. highs, lows, and fogs. He had to send them back I think 3 times cus they kept going out. I personally helped him install them every time. I'm only bashing them cus my experience with them through my friends shows me they aren't worth the hassle. I'm not saying that other people out there haven't had pronominal experience with them, but I just can't see it. I'm a firm believer that you pay for what you get..

Thanks for the responses guys. Yeah I bought my DDM from Scotty so no warranty for me. I knew that going into it, but I wanted to try them out before dropping $60. I might keep them for a little bit longer, but most likely get some Silverstars or try one of the other ones. Once I can get around $250 I will do the projectors because I really like the output on those.

My experience with Silverstar Ultras was theat they burn out like clockwork around 10 months. I had them in a 2001 Tacoma that had DRL's, so I'm sure that played a factor in it. My 96 T4R doesn't have DRL's, so I just might give them another go at some point. My beam pattern is HORRIBLE in my housings, so I'll probably get 99+ housing first. Just my $.02

I run the silverstars in my car, replace every year but I don't mind that. I ran them in my runner before I went to HIDs, the 99+ headlight style is a definite bonus with them. The 97 headlights I had didn't have nearly the same output with the same bulbs.
